According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions.
These "industry experts" are certainly not experts at pirating software. Nice FUD scare tactic marketing too. But I'm sure they do know that even even pirates have access to their app store since all that requires is a microsoft account. They just want people to all be on the same OS to have access to it.

The company has recently shipped an update labeled as KB3035583, which, according to its description, “enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user.”

While it also does exactly what it says, it turns out that there's a little bit more hiding in this update that's offered as optional for computers running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. In the future, the operating system will continue to update gradually with relatively small updates such as Redstone.

Makes sense.  The version structure was built around the idea of software as a product rather than a service.  As everyhing's moving away from something-in-a-box, it's a good idea.  A comparison might be drawn to the way that Facebook and Google Mail has had many updates and shifts, but they never had a version number.  It was just "the latest".

The advantages is that we'll get better reliability, power savings from processor optimizations, and we can talk about what Windows does NOW rather than what they WANT to do in 6 months, a year, etc. (especially the new file system they keep cancelling https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinFS#Development).  The down side is that you no longer own Windows, you're just leasing it and the programs on it.

I have a feeling this will be good for portable software because it runs how you expect, unlike constantly upgraded software, which might yank features or introduce bugs at any time.  I also wonder if it's bad for computer users as a whole; we've seen the app store system behave as a closed loop that invites censorship, resists open software, and takes away the control of the power of the individual developer in exchange for a better purchasing structure.

Anyway, hopefully Microsoft will do it better than Apple (and to a lesser extent Google).

“In Windows 10, we have this notion of a universal app platform,” Box said. “And the apps that target it are called Windows apps. Sometimes we say universal apps, but we call them Windows apps. A Windows app can run on every device family: phone, PCs, Xbox, IoT, and other devices like HoloLens.”

Windows desktop applications are those (Win32) apps that run only on PCs. And despite the re-emphasis on desktop computing in Windows 10, Box still treats them like the legacy technology that they are.

“On PCs, we continue to support the two decades-plus worth of Windows desktop applications … for running them on PCs,” he said. “So sometimes we will talk about a Windows app [what we have been calling universal apps to date] and Windows desktop apps. Windows apps run on all devices. Windows desktop apps [are] PC only.”

'Windows Apps' and 'Windows Desktop Application' could get confusing for some people...

I like the idea of Universal Apps that work on every kind of device. It can be a great thing if done right. As in, it should be possible for the apps to exist outside of the Windows Store and not just filtered through there. Bad thing if it becomes anything like the current Windows Store or the Android shovelware/nickel-and-dime apps hell. Eventually they're going to phase out legacy desktop win32 apps but not anytime soon. Developing apps that work's on multiple platforms will be tough.

Let's just hope Microsoft continues to be transparent and open to developer and consumer feedback. Windows 8 and Xbox One debacles certainly forced them to be.

I'm not sure if the current idea of the self contained settings of portable software will carry over to this universal app thing though... maybe it would sync to your microsoft account...

Granted, but I find that is also certainly a result of the recent new management corporate realignment, since that was when we started witnessing those effects.

Without having used any Windows version newer than 7, I suspect a Windows App would be what we've been calling Web Apps, a specially customized browser that runs something essentially made up of HTML, CSS, Javascript and/or Java. Desktop Applications would be more akin to legacy Windows programs...

With the enhanced potential for unwarranted surveillance and other undesirable side-effects of the model webfork alluded to, I'm not over-optimistic about such new trends, albeit there being really promising features and hardware involved.

FYI, the best generalist appraisal of the state of computing I've seen lately, in what is in fact a deep reflection on the Internet of Things push, was SciFi writer cum EFF activist Cory Doctorow's (longish) presentation in a specialized event in Germany...

"Our digital devices have become reservoirs of long-lived digital pathogens which can be used to attack us in every way."

It has been confirmed that after upgrading to Windows 10 it will be possible to do a clean reinstall at any time afterwards without having to buy a new license.

http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... 0-upgrade/

This is great news for me. I recently bought an SSD and plan to eventually reinstall Windows to it (currently my C: partition is way too big to fit there, so I can't merely clone it). However, I only plan to reinstall Windows after I have progressed enough in certain games I play at the moment, including passing a modern RPG and a set of six campaigns in a strategy game. Both of those will take me ages, probably more than an year combined. This piece of news means that I can upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as it becomes available, take my time with the game goals and finally reinstall Windows 10 to my SSD. :)

I figure most users here are the cautious sort when it comes to new stuff but just in case, a recommendation to not pulling the trigger on Win10 until well after it's release:
The latest build (10130) looks almost finished and polished, but then there are continued issues with the Start Menu not opening or crashing and driver problems that are slightly alarming at this stage of development.

Getting the final release on July 29th
Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build edit:and remain activated*removed*. Once you have successfully installed this build edit:and activated*removed*, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh. edit:*It’s important to note that only people running Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer.*
Maybe a good way to get a free license of Windows 10 while keeping you're current Win7/Win8 license intact if you don't wanna do the upgrade method.

edit: added more links if you wanna read more comments on what people think of this.

edit2:Also looks like Microsoft continues to be terrible with communication. Read this twitter post https://twitter.com/GabeAul/status/611976060863787009 I'm like okay cool but then but then the quote above says "only genuine win7/8.1 upgrade to win10 as part of upgrade offer". Soooo like upgrade offer is one thing and windows insider is another? Is it talking about the same thing?? So do I have to stay in the Windows Insider program and logged in my associated MSA to keep it activated? Will it also require a Win7/8 license beforehand? Guess we'll find out on July 29th.

Edit3: Activation wordage was removed from original blog post.

Eff gives Microsoft a pretty low score on their recent privacy evaluation. Apple did better, AT&T is terrible.

They think I'm too stupid to tweak my windows... I'm afraid to buy the home version now. :D

P.S. wondering if OneDrive synchronization is also automatic... ;)
