Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Good news, thanks. Changelog:

* Windows msi installation package supporting silent installation
* New pdfsam-starter.exe and finally no more “javaw.exe not found” error message
* Confirmation sounds are now working on Java 7
* No more “invisible GUI” and crappy “delete gui-config.xml” workaround
* Upgraded thumbnails generation libraries and langpack

Old thread update:

PDF SAM update: 2.2.4 is out, WPP site hasn't updated yet
http://www.pdfsam.org/
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-too ... fsam.shtml

... includes "unethical read for docs protected with owner password" ... which sounds very interesting.

Similar to PDFCreator, the developer has created a Free/Pro version breakdown with some separate features.

There have been some new versions since the last post but nothing I would call ground-breaking:

Still waiting on the WinPenPack crew for this (in fairness, the latest version is only a few weeks old).

Some minor (but welcome) updates from the PDFSAM's basic version:
In this new release we added ToC generation to the merge task, we upgraded the PDF engine so results from the split tasks are optimized and in some case they will be way smaller then before, we performed some user interface adjustments that users suggested, you can now turn off the notification that asks for a donation and finally you can save a workspace on exit and load one passing it as a command line argument to PDFsam.

There’s a specifically portable version listed as a “platform independent zip file”

Old thread update: Since PDFSAM still does some things that many other tools don't (including commercial) I decided to post a proper set of screenshots:

Imgur now converts everything to video so ... will have to be a link for now:

Imgur still provides the normal GIF link. Both the .gif and .gifv links are identical otherwise, so just remove the "v" and:

PDFsam Basic

#24 Post by Marc »

In case it is of use for sombody else. I did try PDF Shaper to split a pdf but it returned empty pages.
So I found an open-source App with a claimed portable zip and version in Windows, Mac and Linux (java app).
It can be launched with JavaLauncher. I haven't tested it for portability.
PDFsam Basic is our free and open source desktop application to split, merge, extract pages, rotate and mix PDF files.

Latest WinPenPack version is out: 3.2.4
Edit: the new version has additional features but I'm not 100% sure that all features from the old program are present in the new. I recommend keeping a copy of both and can make the old version available if anyone needs it.

This program has saved me several times now. I've used it both with standard PDFs and PowerPoint decks to compare two very similar files in a page-by-page or slide-by-slide view to see even very minor changes between versions by just jumping back and forth between pages.

I'm still having Java problems (as mentioned with my DocFetcher post) but jPortable and PortableApps' Java Launcher was able to get it done with the Platform independent portable zip archive: http://www.pdfsam.org/download-pdfsam-basic/ and launching the pdfsam-community-[version].jar file.

Oh and PDF SAM 3.3.2 is out with some nice changes since the last time I posted
http://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog/ ... 36199.html

  • Fixed Rotate parameters validation

Drag and drop of files over the modules tile in the modules panel
Added scrollbars to every module to work better on small screen
Better support for RTL and Bidi text when generating ToC in merge module
ToC and footer page numbers are now correct even when a blank page is added in merge module
Fixed initial state for a couple of checkboxes in the Settings panel
Better/faster use of temporary buffers in case of drive partitions and net partitions
A good number of other issues fixed in Sejda SDK and SAMBox

Added page selection to the Alternate Mix
Added Normalize page size to the Merge settings
Grouped some setting under Advanced settings
    Added lenient/non lenient tasks execution
Added a Clear all settings item to the Clear button
Added close button to the notifications
    Removed themes
Fixed an issue that could cause tasks to be executed before modal windows shows up
A number of fixes to the underlying PDF engine (SAMBox + Sejda)

Many updates from when this was last discussed, with the most recent release in January. Now at v.4.2.2
https://www.softpedia.com/progChangelog ... 36199.html

Most notably you can arrange PDF files ahead of time and modify the names to get them to assemble in order. I don't think I've seen that elsewhere:
Numerical sort working with trailing digits (Ex. "file 1.pdf", "file 2.pdf", "file 10.pdf")
