EssentialPIM - personal information manager

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

EssentialPIM - personal information manager

#1 Post by ashanker »

[Moderator note: this is the primary EssentialPIM program thread. View database entry]

----

Hi,

Please visit http://www.tranglos.com to download PhoneDeck (address book manager), Oubliette (password manager) or KeyNote (tree-based PIM). There are some other very nice freeware programs there too!

Note: All three downloads come only in installer versions. Install as normal, copy the application directory and then uninstall. No registry entries are created; all settings etc are maintained in ini files in their own app folders.

All three are brilliantly conceived apps, and although no longer being actively developed, have a tremendous fan following in the freeware world :D

Enjoy!

I whole-heartedly second these recommendations btw... I've been using KeyNote for a long time now and have yet to find an application that even comes close, both in terms of features and usability.

I also used to use PhoneDeck for some time and is certainly one of the best customizable address books out there. However, I have to admit that I have since turned to EssentialPIM, now that this is no longer being developed.

KeyNote still rules though as far as hierarchically structured note-taking goes! (this is one thing that isn't so great in EssentialPIM; more adequate than great)

I just wanted to note that EPIM 2.x Note-taking features are much more extensive now than year ago. We actually now can even import KeyNote files along with the structure.

I think the post about Address Book was supposed to be its own submission. But anyway, its over on CNET.

In terms of features, it doesn't appear to have any of our other entries beat, but obviously that doesn't prevent it from being added.

According to the main developer site (gassoftwares.com), it requires .net 2.0, but CNET and the page user sati posted don't mention anything about it. Confusing.

Thanks for posting about EssentialPIM, Midas.

I've been looking for an app that syncs notes, tasks and calendar to Android. The free version does this, but the Pro version allows you to sync to Google and Outlook, which is nice if you use multiple computers. (EssentialPIM's email functionality is only supported in desktop.)

I've been thinking about using OneNote, but that doesn't have a calendar or a todo list. Any other recommendations?
is it stealth? ;)

  • Can we then change OP subject to EssentialPIM so this becomes the official forum topic? (Forgot to ask...) :)

You can build in todolists pretty easy and there's a calendar plugin (haven't tested)

I personally won't use OneNote. I know some folks who absolutely love that program but to me it's more of Microsoft's crap formatting that I've spent so much time trying to get away from. That said, I spend a several hours a month wrestling with outstanding, unfixed Outlook (like putting a red circle on top of an image) and Word (indentation and bullets frequently go insane) so your milage may vary.

I'd probably go toward Zimbra or eM Client, but the search continues for me. All I've been able to use is Thunderbird+lightning and sort of sync them with Google Calendar. Because of more than one bug, I've got it disabled for now and haven't had a chance to come back to it.
