Various old thread updates:

Ongoing problems with F.lux and Redeye both made me give up on screen coloring tools. Instead (strange as this may sound) I'm wearing "computer glasses" which work great and help avoid eye strain. I also recommend eye drops if you live in a dry climate.

Tried to run UniExtract on EyeCare4US but that seemed to break it and appears to write settings to the registry.

Thanks for your feedback, webfork!

I'm still using f.lux (yaP'ed version) with the dimming option (ALT+PgDown).

What's the difference between your computer glasses and maybe a pair of lightly-tinted sunglasses?

I'm speculating, but I think the primary thing is that "computer" glasses are reducing glare, while sunglasses reduce the amount of overall light, which you can do by just reducing the brightness of your screen.

Maybe a better example is that I've worn something a little heavier (more yellow, really) while driving and it's helped diminish those really blinding headlights without making it hard to see.

Thanks to webfork reviving this thread, I started to look at using WorkRave and I'm digging it so far.

WorkRave has some prebundled, randomized exercises every rest break so you can follow them if desired. I'm finding that it's successfully getting me away from the computer. So far, so good! :)

Another edition: Eye Manager

It's a beta and doesn't appear to be staying freeware, but they're offering free licenses to beta testers. Works automatically with location data as well as your webcam to determine color temperature. Pretty amazing.

Hi to all!

I am the lead developer of Eye Manager.

Any feature requests or bugs?

Regards to all,
Ippo

Was just made aware of a f.lux alternative from ghacks.net - SunsetScreen:

They have a purported portable version listed on their website. Haven't tested it yet.

Actually I never got around to this one because (I assumed) it was about to go out of beta. The page even now says that the Beta period ended back in March. Can you update me on the status there?

Also a belated welcome to the forum.

Old thread update:
  • I've been using a Firefox plugin Firelux (ghacks post) with some success.
  • Also (with a little bit of tweaking) ColorVeil might function as a kind of eyestrain-reducer by cutting the amount of blue on the screen. Definitely more for those that want something more hands-on or to experiment.
  • Edit: ClickMonitorDDC might also help.

Thanks for your update, webfork.

As for me, I've been using SunsetScreen almost exclusively. I manually dim the screen using SunsetScreen's brightness global hotkeys and sometimes manually adjust the color, depending on the lighting in the house.

I've also kind of stopped using WorkRave since I last mentioned it. Not through any fault of the program, just laziness :)

Apart from those two, that's it.

Dear freakazoid,
Current F.lux version is 4.34, but yaP’s config is made for 3.10.
Could you tell if there are any changes required to existing config?

I don't use f.lux anymore. I use SunsetScreen.

Hi,

I'm glad I found this thread, my eyes are beginning to get dry and red veins appearing prominently after using the computer.

@webfork,
Is there a difference between using a computer glass and the flux program? Is it better to use computer glass?

I tried a computer glass in a store and it has a yellow tint, I also tried the flux program and it makes the monitor yellow.

@freakazoid
Have you tired using a computer glass? or the sunsetscreen program is enough?
