#1 Post by Kranor »

Please include a URL to the software and any special redirects or instructions for .ini files needed to get the software to work.

Foodfile at http://www.kelpiesoft.com/applib/foodfile/ works with no special redirects needed other than a standard .ini file

(my two are already in TPFC, but leave a few reg entries. JPE fixes this up)

SysExporter
Just a normal ini file needed.

HelpNDoc Personal
Just a normal ini file needed.

This too is in TPFC.

Process Explorer
Redirect the registry keys.

When you build the portable version, you may want to check "keep portable registry in memory" when you get to the step where you redirect the Registry keys, because it takes a lot of time to start up if you don't.

Yes, Process Explorer works well with JauntePE, but I wasn't successful with Process Monitor. I redirected just the registry to memory. The first time procmon is run it works well, but all subsequent runs crash at startup with an MFC runtime error.

I did redirect registry keys (keep in memory) for these two with File System redirect:

Foobar2000 from http://www.foobar2000.org/
It cannot find two of my plugins: single column uie and soundtouch even though they are in the components folder. Other than that, it runs fine. Not sure if there might be other plugins that might not work.

Wordweb from http://www.wordweb.info/
a bit tempremental. It needs wweb32.dll to be copied into the application folder from c:\windows. I had problem with wweb32.exe, so I use the wwnotray.exe instead. When you first launch it, it may ask for the wweb.ww3.

That's strange because your ini file is similar to mine. Did you try it on a pc without wordweb installed?

never mind... I tested it again with another pc and this time it threw a fit. Need more testing. Will report further.

I read in another post that Redllar would like for people to post here to show interest in the program. If there was enough interest, he might consider making JauntePE Open Source...here's my contribution.

Redllar,

I wanted to let you know a few things.

First, I have been following PortableFreeware.com software update and forum in addition to emails to Andrew for more than 18 months now and it is THIS TRHEAD that finally motivated me to register in the forums. In fact, this is my first message.

You should be very proud of this program and the interest that it has generated.

Second, I wanted to let you know that I portablized the following applications which originally write to the registry and they seem to work perfectly.

IconsExtract v1.40 by NirSoft
Noiseware Commuity Edition v2.5 by Imagenomic
Foxit Reader v2.0 by Foxit Software
The Font Thing v0.80 by Sue Fisher
7-Zip v4.42 by Igor Pavlov

I will try to portablize some more complicated applications which also write files and folders such as AdAware, Wink, Miranda, VLC and Skype and post the results here.
And this one

"Portablized" Ad-Aware works flawlessly. Ad-Aware normally only creates folders/files in %userprofile% and does not touch the registry so this was not a huge test, but it works.

Launching the program is a bit slower (like the other programs I tested above), but it is an acceptable delay knowing that it is keeping my system clean.

To be more specifc

#15 Post by chezduong »

To be more specific, I use El Salvador's ASuite 1.4 Open Source Software (OSS) portable menu (search this site) to pass arguments for using the following software:

7Zip - OSS file compression
http://www.7-zip.org/
Registry keys only.
command line:

Code: Select all

$Drive\System\JauntePE\JauntePE.exe -R $Drive\utilities\7Zip\7zFM.exe
7zFM_jauntePE.ini:

Code: Select all

[Registry]
Use=1
Data=.\Data\Registry\%appname%_registry.reg

Use=0
Data=.\Data\Files\

Room Arranger 3.26 - Room decoration/interior and 2D simulator
http://www.aplusfreeware.com/misc/RoomA ... index.html

No registry entries, but writes one file to C:\Windows\bench32.ini on shutdown (thanks Redllar!)

Foxit Reader 2.0 - PDF viewer.
http://foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
Registry keys only. No stray files.

I already mentioned this in my last post, but I found it funny that I could not get JPE to work with a space in the name of the exe file. I had to rename the file without the space. I don't know if this is an ASuite issue or a JPE issue. I suspect ASuite.

Basically, these programs work flawlessly because the program only writes a few settings to the registry and JPE more than successfully redirects the registry stuff to Data\Registry (folders that I create).

Now, I am moving on to more complicated things like redirecting only one file that is saved to C:\ for example -- nothing else. I think I know how to do this in the ini file, but will post when I get new applications up and running.

[Edit]
8/1 Updated websites for programs
8/1 Included AttoBench
8/1 Included more registry keys
8/1 Included reasons for non-portability
8/1 miscellaneous formatting cleanup
