Which Codec Pack do you use?

I can't decide which one to get for Windows 7... so people of TPFC with your votes you will help me decide.

Which Codec Pack do you use, and why?

Use a media player with built-in codecs and you don't need to install codec packs.
(Media Player Classic, KMPlayer/Potplayer, VLC, SMPlayer, UMPlayer, etc)

Your system will appreciate it

Only apps with built-in codecs. Years ago I used to use K-lite.

Like everyone else, I try to use a player with bundled codecs. (I use MPlayer WW.)

However, if I need to do any video editing and encoding that depend on codecs, I use ffdshow but I chose that a long time ago and have stuck with it. I haven't looked into any of the alternatives though.

I used to use FFDShow before discovering GOM Player but then switched to KM Player and now using Pot Player.

Ever since I can remember, I've been using the K-Lite Codec Pack -- just not the Mega version, but the Full one, and that's why I voted for Other.

It's widely available (Filehippo and Betanews are main venues), in constant development over many years and has never, ever caused me any grief. I've tried other packages but they failed to impress me enough to make the switch...

Ditto. SMPlayer opens more files, but occasionally it won't open a file correctly, which is usually backed up by VLC.

I use Light Alloy media player which uses FFmpeg - LibAVCodec

I also keep a copy of Media Player Classic's Standalone Filters - which I then extract and install/register what I need (or the whole pkg) to a folder for other utils/tools on my system to pickup and use
e.g., A/V editors, A/V players, File managers, VirtualDub, etc...

To register/install the filters on your system, open a command window (as Admin) and 'cd' to the extracted 'Filters' folder:
To register/install, type the following:

Code: Select all

for %i in (*.ax) do (regsvr32 /s %i)

To un-register/un-install, type the following:

Code: Select all

for %i in (*.ax) do (regsvr32 /s /u %i)
