CatchChar

#1 Post by I am Baas »

With CatchChar, you can enter your favorite unicode characters in any edit box on Windows easily. CatchChar is a popup menu utility that you can customize to put your often used special characters. This is faster than looking for special characters in an on screen keyboard or in Windows Charmap utility that requires an additional copy, paste operation.

Download installer @ http://file.helpingthings.com/setupcatchchar.exe and uniextract. The application files are in {app} folder. Rename catchchar.exe to catchcharportable.exe. Launch catchcharportable.exe.

Version tested:: V1.6.2
Settings:: Application folder

Another excellent submission from Baas.

Very helpful when you don't need the entire character library from your font selection, just a few commonly-used ones. Clavier is also a great program if you use these characters very frequently and want to give each one its own hotkey.

Features:

* 1.62 megs RAM, 1.67 megs Disk space
* Save whole words and phrases, not just single characters
* Save and load other menus so its easy to swap them out or share
* Change the hotkey but restricted to alt+shift+ some character, which is fine with me

Wishlist:

* A few example lists for various standard purposes (Spanish, French, and Russian language, Money, arrows, etc.) Right now the default is a combination of intellectual property logos and currency.
* Would like to see a button to pull up Windows Character Map, but that's not critical. Just type charmap in the Run menu.

Overall very useful for those that occasionally use characters not on the keyboard.

CatchChar is at version 1.6.5 (March 19, 2013):
◾The starting message can now be switched off.
◾Tip is added on the Main screen on how to start with Windows. Basically, you can copy its shortcut from the desktop to the Startup folder on Start menu to do that.
