Ziepod - podcast client [discontinued]

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Ziepod - podcast client [discontinued]

#1 Post by CyberCeed »

I've been using this program for years now and if it is indeed portable it is a MUST ADD to PFC! I haven't had a chance to test it for true portability yet but have placed a high priority on it!

HIGHLY Recommended :!:

I'll follow up later with results...

Ziepod definitely fails the portable test...

#3 Post by CyberCeed »

My test results were similar to yours Andrew with ZiepodOneClicker.dll in the sysdir... possibly leftover from v0.99.8? Also, if you activate certain advanced settings, additional items are written to the registry. Sorry I wasted your time... I truly had my hopes up for this one to use while traveling with my thumbdrive. :lol: Maybe they'll improve the portability of the 1.0 release. BTW, THANK YOU for your wonderful site! :wink:

Ziepod Follow-Up...

#4 Post by CyberCeed »

I should have been paying closer attention to your RegShot output Andrew as I just realized Newzie is their News Aggregator Freeware which is not the same as their Podcast App Ziepod which is only available at this URL: http://www.ziepod.com/ZiepodSetup.exe ... It still fails the portability test however... IMHO, but not quite as bad. In his blog, the author suggests installing to your PC, then copying the entire app-folder to other PCs or thumbdrives. According to my tests, it will still write to some settings to the registry. I'll investigate further as time allows...

Cheers,
Cyberceed

New Ziepod Info...

#5 Post by CyberCeed »

From their blog at the following URL:

http://www.ziepod.com/ziepod_blog.php?p ... 0214074547

****************************************************

Neat portability feature
There are many ways you can make use of the portability feature of the newest Ziepod version. Here are what we had in mind while developing this feature:

1) If you have multiple computers and a flash disk or some medium that you can keep your Ziepod stored inside and play it from there, then you don't need to install your Ziepod for each computer you have. Just keep it on the storage medium and then run it from any Windows-based computer you can find.

2) If you are formating your computer or simply want to backup your data for any case, you can copy all Ziepod environment into another place and use it whenever you want without losing a bit of information.

3) You can install Ziepod for each windows account on your computer or even keep multiple instances in one account. Both cannot be done with previous versions.

We believe as you start to use it, you will see that Ziepod keeps you connected to the podcasts better than ever even you have multiple computers. There are things you need to know before using it. So we will post about 'How-To:Portability' soon so that you can start to make use of it as soon as possible.

*********************************************************

Apparently, there are additional steps yet to be discussed for improved (or maybe complete) portability... Hmmm?

The plot thickens,
CyberCeed

bump - Xiepod 1.0 podcast receiver

#6 Post by ashghost »

I just stumbled across this thread and thought I'd give Ziepod a try. It's gorgeous and full-featured and definitely portable (just not stealth).

Universal Extractor works fine. Settings are stored in a subdirectory of the application directory, and the "download location" setting accepts relative paths (I used ".\downloads"). It uses IE for rendering and I think it requires flash (which is why it's gorgeous, I guess).

I've been using Juice (installed) for years, and Ziepod just blows it out of the water in flexibility and capability (and continued development, for that matter).

Here's the homepage again: http://www.ziepod.com

Here's what it added to the registry - no settings except window position:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\user\current\software\Ziepod\Ziepod]
"InstallPath"="F:\\Downloads\\ZiepodSetup\\{app}\\Ziepod.exe"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\user\current\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections]
"SavedLegacySettings"=hex(3):46,00,00,00,C1,2A,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
...
          (I truncated the above super-long value)
...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AudioCompressionManager\DriverCache\msacm.imaadpcm]
"cFormatTags"=dword:00000002
"aFormatTagCache"=hex(3):01,00,00,00,10,00,00,00,11,00,00,00,14,00,00,00
"cFilterTags"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw\MostRecentApplication]
"Name"="Ziepod.exe"
"ID"=dword:4718ed11

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\user\current\software\Ziepod\Ziepod\WindowPositions]
"FullMode"=hex(3):2C,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,58,02,00,00,64,00,00,\

Given Ziepod's reported tests are over five years old, have you got any data on how stealth it currently is?

Ziepod

#9 Post by donald »

Ziepod showed no significant registry entries on xp pro sp3 using RegFromApp. (First run on this machine.)

I would appreciate if someone else tested this app, also I am unable to test on windows other than XP and have used the only clean machine available already. (As an aside my antivirus has deleted my other registry tools and my copy of SavageEd2 etc from my flash drive so Was unable to use RegShot etc)

Of significance:
The license allows redistribution of the installer only.
Using "." as the folder path uses the apps folder etc.
Though "\" uses root drive as in the entry "\Documents\Music" works as expected.

I checked ZiePod with PRIMO on Windows XP SP3, in accordance with the extraction instructions posted in the database entrye -- ZiePod seems to be mostly portable, although not entirely stealth...

Regs creatad at:

Code: Select all

HKCU\Software\Ziepod
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\Cache\Extensible Cache\MSHist*
Various files created in new folder 'ZiepodUser' at program location. Other files -- corresponding to the second registry entry above -- created in IE cache folder ('%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History').

Relative paths accepted (but not really tested) in format '.\subdir'.

@Mod: please edit first post subject as befitting to current status as ZiePod official topic. TiA.

Old thread update: Ziepod is a podcast manager that appears to have ended development (no development since '07).

A good overview is over at Softpedia: https://www.softpedia.com/get/IPOD-TOOL ... epod.shtml
