Desktop Media - desktop drive icons

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Desktop Media - desktop drive icons

#1 Post by treis »

This utility creates removable media icon on you desktop the same way that Ubuntu & OSX does. I have just downloaded this program and extracted it by using Universal Extractor. The program files are in the apps folder. I was able to run it by clicking on mediadetect. Not sure if it's stealth but it does not use .net unlike Blue Onions Desk Drive. It also uses a small memory foot print. Could Some please let me know it it is stealth and what you think.http://www.ianandmonica.com/desktopmedia/

It's not stealth, but Napiophelios has created a JauntePE wrapper for it:

Desktop Media automatically adds drive icons to your desktop.
It includes USB drives, fixed drives, CD/DVD drives (When disk is inserted), network drives, and even RAM disk drives.

This application is not stealth.

To address the problems mentioned by webfork:

It should be noted from the previous thread that
symbolic hard-links should not be enabled when using portably.
(This produces Hard Links which are aptly named, and will be left behind)

Further a JauntePE package is available, though I never got that to work for me.

Additionally when using Desktop Media without a Wrapper some Registry settings Will be left on the host. (Not Stealth)

Though like many applications used portably, it can leave something behind,
and it has some functions that may not be desired (hard links), none of this seems to be disqualifying.

webfork am I missing something???

As always your mileage may vary. Some people's experiences with Avast have been really bad, but so far the program has worked well for me.

The symbolic link on my desktop screwed up desktop search programs, which would search my external drive. I can see that being a good thing in certain situations, but that I couldn't disable or turn it off was very annoying. Although I think I was doing something non-standard with the program, I obviously won't touch it again without some hand-holding by the developer.
