UNetbootin a program to create a live usb

#1 Post by donald » Mon Mar 02, 2009 4:32 pm

UNetbootin site says:
UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions from Windows or Linux, without requiring you to burn a CD. You can either let it download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file if you've already downloaded one or your preferred distribution isn't on the list
Go to UNetbootin's home page: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

The site lists these as currently supported OS's in either single or multiple versions
* Ubuntu * Debian * Linux Mint * openSUSE * Arch Linux * Damn Small Linux * SliTaz * Puppy Linux * FreeBSD * NetBSD * Fedora * PCLinuxOS * Sabayon Linux * Gentoo * Zenwalk * Slax * Dreamlinux * Elive * CentOS * Mandriva * FaunOS * Frugalware
Get the full current list of working OS's at: http://unetbootin.wiki.sourceforge.net/ ... tributions.

While I don't think this is an application with a common everyday use it is AFAIK portable and could be used at least for its stated purposes with a Flash drive to create a live USB.

I also did a search before posting: http://portablefreeware.com/?q=unetbootin&m=Search, and: http://portablefreeware.com/?q=universa ... r&m=Search.

Cracking app this. Gets my vote... mainly as I've been using it for a year already.

Now why didn't I suggest this? Nuts!

UNetbootin - multibooting linux from usb/flash drive

#5 Post by -.- » Fri Nov 13, 2009 2:19 pm

Download the linux .iso you want (but i only tested it with a few linux verisons) and unetbootin.. Use Unetbootin to install to flash drive.

Move the folders it created into a new folder and make a copy of the syslinux.cfg file (or rename it because it'll be overwritten when you install second OS)

Do the same for the rest of the OS you want, move the folders to an OS folder you created and keep syslinux.cfg

On last OS you want, just keep everything the same, and open the syslinux.cfg. Now go back to the previous syslinux.cfg you have and open those as well. Copy the boot options you want to the latest syslinux.cfg and modify the boot location to the folders you put them in. Then rename the menu label to get it to show what you want. You can rename the Label to make it go in order.

Or use the pendrivelinux guide for multibooting from iso
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/boot-multi ... iboot-usb/

Some pictures of my flash drive, since I know i'm not good at writing this. :( lol
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5521/root.jpg (picture of how my flash drive looks when I open it)
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5167/syslinux.jpg (what my syslinux.cfg looks like)
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/204/folderltw.jpg (the xpud folder that I have)

Sorry if this isnt written well or if everyone knows this already, but I thought it was neat that I could multiboot on flash drive so I thought to share it with people. Not too sure where the thread belongs but it's somewhat of a discussion.

No UNetbootin is really cool but I have found on some occasions that it won't work for every Linux distro too e.g Kon-Boot. But excellent tutorial alot better then what I saw on Hak5 to create a multiboot flash drive. The editing of syslinux.cfg looks lot easier to understand then how it was initially made out to be!! I think this will be my next project..

Shardana Antivirus Rescue Disk Utility (Sardu) is another piece of software to create a multiboot flash drive.

Create a multi-OS bootable USB drive

#10 Post by webfork » Fri Jun 24, 2011 11:41 am

If you didn't have a use for that 16 gig flash drive, here's one possible use:

YUMI 0.0.2.3
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multi ... b-creator/

Note that this is early stage and not clearly open source so I put it under the UNetbootin thread. I'll split it off if anyone is interested.

Any plans to split off Y.U.M.I? It appears to be portable, but I haven't tested it.

Unetbootin is currently v6.0.8 (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetboo ... ootin/608/; last changelog found is for v5.4.9: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetboo ... ootin/549/).

NOTE: it seems that use of Unetbootin is currently discouraged for Debian based liveCDs -- check http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=775689...

Found an article from Seagate that recommends use of UNetbootin for the creation of USB boot drives: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/e ... cale=en-us
