Today maxthon 2.0 has been officially released.
I have been testing it and the first impression is that it is a great browser.
Much better then the previous version, but:

I am afraid it is no longer portable.

I found several entries in the registry and a (until now) empty folder in the user profile directory.

The folder under user profile (MxBoost) seems to remain empty for me as well.

I didn't find anything in the registry that stands out. The settings seems to be written to the app folder under "shared account" mode.

The biggie is when I tried to access the "Maxthon SetupCenter", it appears blank. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Maybe it could be the Win2K machine that I was using.

Also it crashed a couple of times when I was using it. Doesn't seem very stable. I will stick with the "classic" version for now.

I use Windows XP and have no problems with the Maxthon setup center.

At first it crashed sometimes, but now I have no problems anymore. Perhaps not all bugs have been fixed yet.

I found traces in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/
software/classes/M2.filter
software/classes/M2.Language
software/classes/M2.plugin
software/classes/M2.Skin

I used the install, copy folder and uninstall method and then ran the application using sandboxie.

I was searching in the Maxthon forum and found this posting:

The forum moderator says that:

No info other than the location where M2 is installed is entered in user branch of registry.

Also about copy Maxthon2 folder to USB drive:

Both Maxthon1 and Maxthon2 have always been portable in this way, all files are contained in the folderstructure below the main folder, and they do not require any special registry settings, so yes, it's offically portable. (by design I might add)

That's fine for me.
Only thing now is that the final version is not stable enough.

Maxthon 3 is in-development and it looks a little similar to another Portable browser ... Opera.

Question: Whats the difference between V1 & V2? Can't see the major differences on the website.

I used Maxthon 2 for a while, some time ago, and I was very happy with it.
I don't know exactly why I'm not using it anymore. I guess I'm more like an Opera man (it does 99% of what I need 99% of the time).
As I also have Firefox, Chrome, Iron, SeaMonkey as backups, I don't see why I wouldn't take Maxthon 3 for a spin (and indeed it looks alot like Opera).
Let's check it out!

It writes to %APPDATA% It might look a bit like Opera but it sure doesn't act like Opera. I'm not testing an further!

We just finished working with the Maxthon guys on Maxthon Portable 3.0.20.3000 and I was debating how to do the listing on PFC. There's a very old version of Maxthon Classic 1.6.7.34 listed in PFC already. It's old enough that I don't believe it is supported any longer and this new release should replace it. But I just wanted to double-check to ensure no one would mind dropping the discontinued 'classic' version.

Maxthon 2 is still available, but Maxthon 3 is the main version now and the one promoted on their homepage. I didn't check until now, but the 1.x version isn't even available on Maxthon.com anymore.

So, come to think of it, PFC probably shouldn't be listing the 1.x version anymore.

UPDATE: I switched it over to the current official Maxthon Portable. 1.x is no longer supported and is unavailable for download.

User Oufti (thanks!) pointed out that a portable version of Maxthon is available in the offical site. I've downloaded it; the settings are stored in the application folder and it's apparently stealth.
In case that someone can confirm that I think it deserves the main entry (nothing against PortableApps.com version; just to maintain coherence).

We're chatting with our Maxthon team in France about switching it over to the PAF version instead. Maxthon's first portable release is a bit clunky to say the least. It's a 7-Zip (instead of a zip or portable installer), so you can't even extract it without first getting 7-Zip Portable. And there's no EXE in the root directory, which can be confusing to some users. Paths break internally for specific settings as everything is stored as full paths, too. For some reason, it's also only English and Simplified Chinese, instead of the full set of languages that Maxthon Portable on PortableApps.com is.

Visit the home page: http://www.maxthon.com/
Download link is on the middle-right side of the screen "Portable Version Download"
Extract using 7-zip to a folder of your choice
Run Bin/Maxathon.exe

Not sure how to react: I definitely like when developers put out natively portable software, but this is kind of a mixed bag. Obviously the extract instructions are more complicated than PA, but there's a dramatic size difference.

Compressed: 23.1 megs (PA version is 31 according to their page)
Uncompressed: 76.7 (PA version is 55 according to our page)
