A Quick Note

#1 Post by Local »

All those who frequent the giveawayoftheday site may be interested in today's giveaway.
NoteFrog lets you find any scrap of information on any free-form note you have ever saved, and find it in an instant. And we mean every single scrap of information: every note, name, address, phone number, e-mail address, appointment, birthday, web site address, payment, diary entry, brainstorm, joke, plan, equation, and slip of paper!
There are no discernible registry entries I can find and the database can be stored in the app directory by using relative paths in the ini.
Also, the registration key is stored in the ini.

I reinstalled, and finally, after creating a blank NoteFrog.ini file, got information into it. It still did not register for me, until my fourth or fifth try.

I finally did get it registered. Next trick--make it portable. It asks where to put the NoteFrog.db the first time you run it, and if you do not choose [OK] it did not update the .ini file with the location. To make portable, I found that you have to put
Database = .\NoteFrog.db
into the NoteFrog.ini file (replace what is there), and then it works.

It has two things I like better than MemPad (http://portablefreeware.com/?id=889) and one thing that I think will keep me from using it instead of Mempad

Pro
1. It has a Print item. I use Clip2Print (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=2131) for MemPad to print articles.
2. It has Rich Text Format

Con
1. And the reason I am sticking with Mempad; I cannot find how to do universal searches on the database. I use this all the time, for this is what changes it from a database into an intuitive database. If someone has an answer to this, I would consider NoteFrog.

2. The files are mostly binary. While there are a couple binary bytes in Mempad files, you can still extract the information easily from them with Notepad.

i have heard they will be hosting a 'portable' enabled version that will work with the same reg key as gaotd in a few days.

If anyone is interested, I can let you know.

regarding universal searches - wow, that's it's real strength. I love it. Like the old infoselect pgm from days gone by. And actually, the free version has all the features most users would ever need. that's what i was using prior to gaotd.

regarding the items being in a database - you can extract them to ordinary windows plain text files individually or in groups any time you wish. Or it's easy to cut/paste to other programs - it can also be used as a clipboard collector. Not too bad.

Did you check out the web site?

I did, and if you bury enough in the FAQs you do see some better instructions. Universal search is not at all intuitive. I will be trying some things over the enxt day or two to see if I can make it function more to my liking.

It is good that it can export plain text, but if you have the file without the program, worst case scenario, you are still stuck. This is a preference, as I have multiple copies of MemPad, on each system and usb key I own, etc., but it is an old precautionary habit.

Actually, you can navigate the data file with any sqlite3 utility.

I have used the free version of sqlite expert.

I installed it on one machine and moved the program folder to another and it runs fine, so I would say so.
