BiblioExpress: a reference manager for researchers

#1 Post by pierluigi.polese » Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:03 am

BiblioExpress is a simple reference manager for researchers. It is the freeware edition of Biblioscape. BiblioExpress can be used to collect literature references of different types, to explore bibliographic resources on the Internet, as well as to serve as a free viewer of bibliographic data. BiblioExpress can format records in several popular styles, including ACS, APA, and MLA. BiblioExpress is designed to be small and efficient. You can run BiblioExpress from a USB drive.

Platforms: Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP

System requirements: 486, Pentium, 16 MB RAM, 6 MB of space

Be careful using BiblioExpress if you need correct APA citation formats. The APA formatting that it produces is often wrong.

APA uses italics instead of underlining, and it does not show issue numbers for journals that use continuous pagination across issues within volumes (which is standard practice for scholarly and professional journals). This program also fails frequently to use correct "downstyle" capitalization in formatting journal article titles.

Also, be careful of Citation Machine at http://citationmachine.net, which also frequently produces incorrect or incomplete APA citation styles, especially in the formatting of journal article titles.

Many universities offer very good web sites that give guidelines and examples of correct APA citation style. For example, Cornell provides APA citation style help and examples at http://www.library.cornell.edu/newhelp/ ... g/apa.html .
