Q-Jot contact ?

#1 Post by __philippe »

Hello,

Anyone ever managed to contact Q-Jot developer, Kenny Heimbuch ?

This jewel of a terse Notepad, already close to near-perfection, would reach top spot in my "Tiny Programs" Hall-of-Fame,
were it not for two lacking features:

1 "Yellow Marker" highlighter function on the toolbar, to allow "Background Higlighting" of user-selectable text
(this is distinct from "Syntax Highligting", presumably better served by specialized programmer's editors, already available by the dozen)

2 "StrikeOut" function - (minor cosmetic addition):
Bring the existing "SrikeOut" function on the toolbar (currently, it's only accessible via the [Format -> Style-> StrikeOut] menu selection)

I tried reaching the presumed program author, Kenny Heimbuch, at the following addresses, to no avail :

xtort.net@gmail.com (no answer)

omziff@yahoo.com (mail bounced)

Also left message directly on http://xtort.net/freeware/contact/ , deafening silence resulted.

I know the site has been dormant for quite a few years, but perhaps some PFC member already had better luck and could provide a useful lead to follow ?

Thanks,

__philippe

I've never interacted with the xtort folks, but their freeware page indicates the project has been down for 5 years now so it's unlikely you'll get much response on feature requests. Pstart has a similar problem.

What I'd recommend is throwing them something that may grab their attention, such as a feature bounty (add something in exchange for cash or a donation to one of the causes they list: http://xtort.net/freeware/causes/ ). I rarely see developers pick up a piece of code after they've left it alone for long enough so I'd ask for the source code and take it to donationcoder.com, ask someone to take up the banner of adding additional features.

---

On a side note, their http://xtort.net/ page lists our site's RSS feed right at the top. Thanks?

Thanks for those thoughtful recommendations.
Suggestion about transferring source code to http://www.donationcoder.com seems especially intriguing.

Q-Jot https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=329

As of this writing (Oct 28, 2024), Q-Jot seems to be an "Oldware", that cannot run on Windows 10.

Out of curiosity, I uni-extracted QJot.exe ... And the files that can be extracted have the time stamp 6/19/1992.

I tried : https://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/how- ... n-windows/ to no avail !

Too bad, because Q-jot was supposed to have the capability to sort .... "something" (that obviously I could not test) according to the screenshots on the Softpedia website:

NOTE: ... Weird that Q-Jot is listed on the TPFC home page under "Popular Titles"

... Glad to know Q-Jot works fine with Win7 and that it is a great app :? !
I see there is more work on my side to find out how to circumvent the RPC server problem with Win10

And please don't forget to tell us if you ever do find that out, juverax...

I tried Q-Jot on two older laptops: Win XP and Win7.
I can start Q-Jot normally, but the "Sort" tool ( A-Z / Z-A) does not work (it does ... nothing).

@ __philippe Please, can you confirm that "Sort" works for you on Win7? Thanks !

Would you believe I never ever tried thus far using Qjot SORT function since installed (first under WinXP) way back when,
about the time I joined TPFC (≈2013?), I confess to my everlasting shame...

But Juverax will no doubt be thrilled to learn that SORT does indeed, under Win7, ...suspense...
Spoiler!
NOT WORK !

(besides that unfortunate quirk, I Hereby Sustain and Persist, your Honor: still the best jotting tool this side of the galaxy)!

Q-Jot https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=329

There is no hope to have the SORT functionality fixed (in Q-Jot).
The website is gone, only available on https://web.archive.org/web/20061008050 ... /xtort.php

xtort.net was also the developer of SubPad among several other apps.

How about reverse engineering Qjot.exe ?
With a decent disassembler and a mere hundred hours of painstaking work,
it should be a cinch to modify the PE to suit your needs ...

I would not touch s.o's code even with a ten feet pole.
I enjoy good night sleep.
It is not only about disassembling, you also need to know what you are doing and looking for.
Let's hope the developers of Q-Jot release the source code ..... and some people will feel like looking at it, fork it, so they can advertise their achievements on their resumes :D
