Mplayer for Windows (CLI media player)

#1 Post by Midas »

I just realized there's no topic for Mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/), one of the longest in-development media toolsets available in several different platforms and underlying several other well known players, chiefly SMPlayer.

While there are several prior mentions of Mplayer around the forums there's no dedicated topic; the present one aims to solve that, as well as helping in figuring out the lineage of other related FLOSS media players.

MPlayer is a multi-platform open source media player. MPlayer can play virtually all video and audio formats, including popular formats such as DVD, Blu-ray, MKV & DivX/Xvid. MPlayer doesn't require any external codecs or installation.
MPlayer is a free and open-source media player software. It is available for Linux, OS X and Microsoft Windows. Versions for OS/2, Syllable, AmigaOS, MorphOS and AROS Research Operating System are also available.
mpv is a GPLv2-licensed fork of mplayer2 and effectively its successor. Since June 2015, mpv starts the work to relicense as LGPLv2.1 or above.

Info on Windows Mplayer releases can rapidly become as confusing as the remaining history of the player, so here's a list on what appears to be the official sources (currently carrying different releases):

True. Funnily enough, it was precisely the one online resource that prompted my OP.
