zmPortable (Launcher for Zoom) released by PortableApps.com

#1 Post by JohnTHaller »

Hi all. Thought you'd be interested in the new zmPortable launcher for Zoom I just posted. It will automatically download Zoom and set it up as a portable app. The zmPortable PA.c Launcher does a little more heavy lifting than usual and took a little more time to develop and test. Zoom locks its settings to each Windows install. So, simply moving it from one to PC to another would normally reset all your settings. The zmPortable PA.c Launcher detects this and saves your per-PC settings so you'll have them as you move between your regular PCs or sync via your cloud folder. It will also store a copy of the 32-bit and/or 64-bit browsers Zoom uses on Windows 7/8.1 if you use it on those operating systems without duplicating them between copies of your settings, saving about 110MB per PC settings store. Lastly, it will move shared items between settings sets like Emojis, saving hundreds of more MBs if you regularly use multiple PCs.

Zoom is one of the programs that most benefits from a portable format. The software is intensely configurable, meaning if you had to reconfigure Zoom to specific needs every day, it could become a massive headache. So a PA version is welcome news.

Nice! I see it has "Download 32-bit" but not "Download 64-bit", should it be fixed per this description?
Also, by 7/8.1 did you also mean 10/11 or is it different there?

The copy of Zoom itself is the 32-bit version. It will automatically download a full Chromium-based browser on Windows 7/8 for its own use matching the bit depth of the OS itself. So, on Windows 7 64-bit, the 32-bit Zoom will download a 64-bit Chromium browser to use. On Windows 10/11 Zoom will use Microsoft Edge WebView, the embeddable browser component that works with Edge. It won't do this on Windows 7/8 as even if Edge is installed, it's unsupported and insecure.
