FotoSketcher

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

FotoSketcher

#1 Post by JohnW »

FotoSketcher can help you create images that look like they have been hand drawn by an artist. You may wish to turn a portrait, the photograph of your house or even the picture of your pet into a black & white or colour drawing or painting.

I tried it and was quite impressed with the 'Pencil Sketch' option.

I think the Registry entries are transients.

I couldn't extract with UniversalExtract. I tend to stay away from anything I have to install first, unless it is totally worth it. This effect can be produced in the Gimp can't it? Is it that much better in FotoSketcher?

@Ameri-CAIN

I extracted using Universal Extractor.
I'm using version 1.6 with the latest innounp program
They're both betas but I've not had any problems.

I did post a reference to them in PFC.

I share your view on Install/Uninstall.

Fotosketcher is not a GREAT prog but it's worth a look.

I've had photo2sketch tp://4techies.blogspot.com/2006/09/photo2sketch.html
for a while now that does this kind of job and all in all I have to say that it it pointless.

The concept sounds cool but apart from showing a few friends when you first download it there seems no use at all.
It's the software equivalent of that candy floss maker I have hidden in my kitchen cupboard.

Plus as Ameri-CAIN says, Gimp can do this as can most self respecting graphic editors.

I am pleased that I found out about the UniversalExtract 1.6 and the version 20 innounp.exe through your post. :D I am glad to know that the new version extracted FotoSketcher! I have seen the same error I recieved when I tried to extract with the 1.5 version UE and .19 version of the innounp on other programs, which I am going to start going through again. I also looked at FotoSketcher. Pretty decent program that does what it says. Intuitive enough for Grandma to figure out.

Thanks again for the 411 on the latest and greatest on UE 1.6 and .20 inounp.exe. I don't know how I missed it earlier.

Or install VirtualPC - it isn't portable but you can install most stuff inside the virtual pc and copy just the things you want back to your real machine :)

VirtualPC blows. VMWare is way better quality if your going to be installing something.

1. Virtual PC is free, small and easy - it was my understanding VMWare was very expensive, and seems slow and big.

2. You need to write more than "blows" if you are going to convince anybody.

This is a tangent and isn't the right thread for this discussion, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... l_machines

Virtual PC 2004, Virtual PC 2007, VMWare Server and VMWare Player 2.0 are all closed source but are free.

Matty is correct about VMWare Server and VMWare Player being free but closed source. I did not know that wasn't already known. VMWare Server will run on your Windows XP machine the same way it runs on a Server 2003 machine. The only difference is you have to Stop your default web service in your IIS Admin tab, because Windows XP is a client OS and will only allow you to have one website running at a time, and VMWare Server installs a new website to use for its user interface. If you want to set up an ESX VMWare farm, where you host several hundred VM's that share resources from all Servers in your Farm, then yes, you are correct VMWare is very expensive, and very big!

For real though, don't take my word for it at all! I encourage you to download VMWare Server and try it out. Compare it to Winblows VirtualPC for yourself. You just have to register for a free key. One time registration. They really only ever send emails, like 5 to 7 times a year if that about new version releases, or their pay products. If you are concerned about getting junk mail, I'm sure you have an account you use specifically for registering for things.

For more info on FREE VMWare Server, just go here:
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

Once you get it up and running, check out some of the many free Virtual Appliances they offer.
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/

And Matty is correct about this not being the forum for this discussion but this is my rebuttal to Kermodes comments on my quick jeer at VirtualPC and it must be allowed.

But to put things back on course, how about that FotoSketcher? So what if a professional program, can do the same thing or not, FotoSketcher can be ran portably. I just asked JohnW to describe it compared to the Gimp because initially I couldn't extract the program to see what it did. If the Program is portable and the Reg entries are negligible, should it not be in the database?

I just glanced at wikipedia under vmware and it said the player could only playback not create, so i thought that was it - I generally don't want software labled as "sever".

That alone is a dealbreaker.

Something which installs a webbrowser to handle the interface sounds too big right there.

Afraid I'm going to have to, I'm not going to download something that requires me to register.

I came across this

http://vmtoolkit.com/files/folders/conv ... ntry8.aspx

which converts those images to the Virtual PC format - so perhaps there is soemthing usefull there ;) (and the converter seems to be portable)

Well I think we have said what there is to say about FotoSketcher.

Sounds like you have made up your mind. Stick with what makes you comfortable. I've actually tried both and I'll stick with VMWare Server.

I just stumbled upon this. Not sure if any one has submitted it before but it looks cool. There is a portable version and it's freeware.
Check it out.
