CodeDead software

DeadLock - file/folder unlock
Synopsis wrote:DeadLock is a free program for the Windows operating system that helps you unlock files or folders that you cannot delete, move or rename because Windows claims they are still in use.
(source: ghacks)

Posting this to discussion as I haven't been able to perform a full test yet. Mid-way through working on it, I figured out that it requires dotNET 4.6, which I don't have on my test machine.

Steps: Run UniExtract with default settings, launch DeadLock.exe

License: claims GPL v3 but I can't find the source anywhere

Stores settings in "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\CodeDead\DeadLock.exe_Url_{USUAL .NET RANDOM STRING}\1.2.0.0\user.config"

HOWEVER, this folder is not created if you do not open app settings and click save. So in other words, its portable if you use it in its default configuration...

Can someone speak to this? The developers are saying dotNET is telling them where to put the settings:
DeadLock Devs wrote:The setting themselves are managed by the .NET Framework. This means that the settings file is usually saved to the AppData folder on your system (C:/Users/Username/AppData). We will add an import/export settings function to a future release of DeadLock so you can easily transport your settings ;).
As there are plenty of portable dotNET programs, someone more familiar with the system should have some kind of answer for this.

Thanks for checking. I get what you're saying but that's a distinction without a difference; for example, if you just run Microsoft Office with it's default settings everywhere, it will also be indistinguishable from a portable version. On the other hand, if there's really no reason to edit the settings as they don't really impact operation, we might say the settings saved are without real consequence and this should be an exception.

Well the few settings you can change make it not portable anyway. Run on startup and explorer integration are disabled by default and if you are want any app to be mostly portable then you keep those turned off. Only problem I could see is changing languages.

If it weren't for those annoying random strings in the settings folder name, I could make a portable launcher for some .NET apps. It might be the default behavior for .NET apps if not customized by the developer. But I know a few perfectly portable .NET apps that store settings within the executable folder. So I don't know why some devs think they don't have control of where settings are saved if that's what they're saying in that quote.

Vidcoder for example, you can change where it saves it settings by editing its vidcoder.exe.config file.

Some quick googling on .NET portabilizing:

Cool, thanks for the input. I've passed that along to the dev.

DeadPix - fix dead pixels

#6 Post by joby_toss »

https://codedead.com/?page_id=233
DeadPix is an application that can help you fix pixels that are stuck on your screen.
It can fix stuck pixels by rapidly cycling the color value of the stuck pixel. Please note that this tool does not provide a 100% success rate.

Tested v1.1.0.0 on win10x64: requires .NET v4.0, it's portable (no settings to save) but not stealth (usage log file in AppData).

P.S. has anyone found this kind of app working? They never did for me...

Great stuff. If I come across a bad LCD monitor, I'll definitely try this.

RAM Optimizer

MemPlus can be used to reduce the amount of RAM that is being used by applications on your system. In essence, freeing up memory so that more memory is available to you!

Old thread update:

CodeDead is behind the ambient noise generator Opal (https://codedead.com/software/opal), discussed here for Windows and Linux. Its portable despite this thread being set in "not portable".
