Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

TrueIP - Log your dynamic IP address change history

Have you ever wondered how frequently your dynamically allocated WAN IP address is renewed by the local ISP ?
Admittedly, not an information of earth shattering import to track down, but interesting tidbit all the same, (at least to me...;-) )

Of course, we already have Robin Keir's IP2, the ultimate concise tool (14k) to display the current allocated WAN IP address.

However, short of running IP2 continuously in some kind of batch file scheduled for execution at pre-set intervals,
there is an easier alternative:

TrueIP, a small (166k) utility that will do all the work for us: http://w3.haztek-software.com/apps/trueip.html

Designed to run in the system tray, this unobtrusive tool will continuously monitor (and log) your IP address changes

· Tracks internal and external (WAN) IP addresses
· Notifies when your IP changes, via E-mail, FTP, pop up notification, or an optional online service called TrueIP Online
· Logs your recent IP addresses for review of change history at a later date
· Runs in the system tray wasting no space on the desktop and using minimal system resources

The *.install exe package was built with InnoSetup installer (package version detected: 5310).

To sidestep full installation, unpack with innounp.exe (0.38) http://innounp.sourceforge.net/
(or Universal Extractor with up-to-date innounp module) to dump the files in a folder of your choice,
then run trueip.exe.

Tested under winXP.

I tested TrueIP versions 2.0.2.9, 2.0.2.10, 2.0.8.0- none of them are portable, settings saved in user.config file in AppData:

TrueIP 2.0.8.1

Joey Hazlett, the developer of TrueIP, responded extremely quickly to my request for portable version. TrueIP is portable since version 2.0.8.1:
2.0.8.1 (Released: 2018-05-20)
  • added portable mode support. just create a file called "portable" in the application directory
Downloads Instructions
  • Download the archive (TrueIP_Portable.zip);
  • Extract the archive to a folder of your choice;
  • Run the executable (TrueIP.exe);
  • portable flag is included in the archive - don't delete it;
  • Settings are saved in XML file (settings.xml) inside program folder;
However TrueIP is not stealth yet- it still creates user.config file in AppData. The developer explained that:
That file that is created is due to backwards compatibility with older versions.
This behaviour may change in the future.

Thanks to Joey Hazlett for releasing a portable version of TrueIP!

In fact it should be version 2.0.8.2 that explodes, not version 2.0.8.1, no matter that file version shows 2.0.8.1:

  • removed legacy user.config file being generated in the C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\HazteK_Software\ directory when in portable mode
I have already contacted the developer. I suppose that version 2.0.8.1 should work fine under Windows XP as it does under Windows 8. I expect a fix soon.

Wondering idly whether developers do actually enjoy misleading the hell out of their users about successive versions releases ?

The developer released 4 versions within 2 days and in the meantime I was bombarding him with messages. In such circumstances omissions are likely to happen. If you have time you may check whether TrueIP version 2.0.8.3 would work fine for you under Windows XP.

I am glad that the developer took portability so seriously so in two days from not portable (2.0.8.0) the program evolved to portable but not stealth (2.0.8.1), then to portable and stealth but crashy (2.0.8.2) and finally to portable, stealth and stable (2.0.8.3). I wish that more developers were as responsive and as quick as the one behind TrueIP.
