[Mod note: as the present is the official forum topic for Dia (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1325) the subject topic was changed; originally, it was "Open source Visio and Fireworks alternative"]

What the best open source options to Fireworks and MS Visio? I use a mac, recently laid-off, would like to add wire framing and work flows to my skill set. Looking for options to the expensive apps Fireworks and Visio. Would love to hear about the best open source options Cheers, Steve.

DIA Portable is oft-mentioned as a portable alternative to Visio.
It does NOT open the proprietary visio .vsd files, and I am not aware of any software that does, other than the correct version of Visio itself.

OpenOffice.org Draw is a Visio clone, but I am aware of no freeware (open source or otherwise) which is full-up compatible with Visio.

I spent a lot of time with Dia some years ago and was really frustrated by the program. I've mostly switched over to LibreOffice Draw/Impress for diagrams, but usually just an overview image after I come up with some process. Does anyone actually recommend Dia or some other program?
