While I really like the Faststone products, shouldn't the detail in this version be sent to the payware section leaving only the comment that current versions are no longer free?

Possibly. But, initially, I posted the update. Then I ran the new version and discovered the Shareware pop-up. So, I just edited my original message's Subject to alert everyone of that "update", too.

FastStoneCapture DIY snapshot sound

#24 Post by __philippe »

FastStoneCapture last freeware version (v5.3) has been my preferred screen capture tool for a long while,
considering its remarkably small footprint (1M exe) and modest memory usage requirements, as nicely illustrated in TP109's usage report.

Only (minor) annoyance so far: the faint, fleeting "camera sound" cue which confirms a screenshot was snapped is almost inaudible.

There is an easy trick to tone up this built-in rickety peep, however :
change the internal WAV file Resource for a better one of your liking, of course...;-)

ResourceHacker to the rescue !
First, since FScapture.exe is packed with UPX, do unpack it with some UPX utility.

Image

Open the unpacked version with ResourceHacker, lo-and-behold, the first resource displayed is the WAV file...;-)

A right click on the left panel label "WAVE--> CLICKX:20252" conveniently reveals an option to "Replace Resource".

Image

Do as proposed, selecting the new WAV file you'll have thoughtfully copied beforehand in a suitable location, such as FastStone's own directory.

Image

Test your newly grafted sound bite with ResourceHacker "Play WAVE" button.

Save your handywork under a new name and exit ResourceHacker.
The just modified FScapture.exe will happily execute in its now unpacked edition.
Alternatively, the modified exe might be re-packed anew with the UPX utility.

Merry snapshots taking !

BILL-of-MATERIALS :

1. Faststone Capture freeware v5.3

2. ResourceHacker 4.4.26 - Remarkably evolved Resource Editor utility

3. UPX Packing/Unpacking utility: CLI GUI

4. One new "camera shutter" WAV sound file
Take your pick from thousands of sound bites available for free testing on-line.

Ta, webfork ... :)

Most of the credit for this hack really belongs to ResourceHacker's developer Angus Johnson.
His remarkable tool has been evolving and fine-tuned over many years between 1999-2016, and is still meticulously updated, literally as we speak...;-)

RH website includes a noteworthy help narrative copiously illustrated with pertinent screenshots of the product versatile functions.

From the overview:
- Resource Hacker™ has been designed to be the complete resource editing tool: compiling, viewing, decompiling and recompiling resources for both 32bit and 64bit Windows executables.
- Resource Hacker™ can open any type of Windows executable (*.exe; *.dll; *.scr; *.mui etc) so that individual resources can be added modified or deleted within these files.
- Resource Hacker™ can create and compile resource script files (*.rc), and edit resource files (*.res) too.
