Open Contacts Version

#1 Post by AlephX »

Hi!
This is a very interesting application for the ones who need an almost professional Contact Manager...
It is quite heavy, but I find it very flexible.

http://www.fonlow.com/OpenContacts/
Essential Features:

Unlimited data fields to store any contact info. Along with preset fields, you may add unlimited data fields grouped by section.

Manage relationships between individuals, organizations and departments.
Comprehensive Categories. You may click on a category to view contacts of the category, or right click to list contacts of subcategories recursively.

Search through any data field, and search birthday of people.
Interact with Windows applications of telephony, Skype, emailing or Web/File browsing etc.

Map service with Google Maps. Uou may use either single line address or multi-line address.

Print contact info and labels with built-in functions or external label printing programs.

Import from MS Outlook, Outlook Express (WAB), Eudora, Netscape/Mozilla Thunderbird, XML (xCard), CSV, LDIF and vCard.
Export to indented text, CSV, Excel, vCard, XML (xCard) and HTML.
Attach photos and files .

LAN supports for multiple users in Local Area Network, using true Client/Server architecture.
What´s new?
Version 3.9.2

Import from LDIF files exported from address book of Mozilla/Netscape/Thunderbird. Previous method of importing CSV is obsolate.
Import from LDIF files exported from other data sources. You will then need to define your own mappings saved in XML.

now 2.93
Export data to XML with categories and linked contacts. And you can export both people and and companies in the same XML if you select contacts in a search window. Thus, this can be used for merging contact info to another address book database.
From imported XML, recovery categories and linked contacts

How to get it really portable

#4 Post by cmmehl »

I have been looking for a while at this program, deeply impressed by the incredible flexibility to store information on your contacts, and the possibility to link contacts together. Really nice, but I haven't been able to get it portable, got errors on missing dll's and/or had to chose my database location ...

The worst was actually the so-called portable version that can be downloaded on the site. This may work if you organise your stick's folder-structure exactly as defined by portableapps.com, but I wanted to have it my way. And finally I found out how to do it.

I did a regular install and started the program, to be asked for the working directory. I created a new directory within the program's folder, and the necessary content was automatically created (Data, Files and Templates folders and main.ini). Then I copied the entire Open Contacts folder to the place where I wanted it on my stick and uninstalled the program.

Now to start it from my stick, I use Qsel and made use of the "Directory (optional)" command in the configuration. I selected the working folder I had created earlier. Nevermind that Qsel seems to write there the full path including drive-letter - it will change the drives-letter when the drive is connected elsewhere.

Since then I can start Open Contacts without fuss from wherever I connect my stick to. I haven't tried yet how it deals with files attached to a contact, but I think as long as these are saved in the Files folder of the working directory, there shouldn't be an error.

Open Contacts is an amazing program that I can only recommend, the only caveat being the absence of encryption options. Try it out!

Chris

Portable version ocportable.zip - 404 Not Found
Version 6.1.9.727 only in PortableApps format, should entry be changed?
Latest version 6.2.1.640 - only installer, here instructions to make installed version "portable", but maybe it can be extracted?
All that needs more testings which I can't make right now
