Today I browsed the addons repo and found some interesting ones I didn't know about.

Disable WebRTC
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... dl-hotness
WebRTC is a communication protocol that relies on JavaScript that can leak your actual IP address from behind your VPN, by default. This addon fixes that, making VPNs more effective [1].

Source code is available here: https://github.com/ChrisAntaki/disable-webrtc-firefox

If there's an issue with the plugin, please let me know: https://github.com/ChrisAntaki/disable- ... fox/issues
Edit: There's a pref suggested in the addon comments...
In about:config, you can set media.peerconnection.ice.default_address_only=true. No need to completely disable WebRTC.

Disable Visited Links
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefo ... l-othersby
Did you know that visited link styles allow websites to elicit web history? [1]

This plugin cleanly disables visited link styles.

SoundCloud Downloader - SoundGrab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... b-dl-users
Adds download link/button to all SoundCloud tracks and sets.
EPUBReader
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... b-dl-users
With EPUBReader you can read ePub files just in Firefox. No additional software needed!
And two addons more I don't know really how to tell if they are of trust...
ZenMate Security & Privacy VPN
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... b-dl-users
Unblock the web and change your IP with 4 locations across the globe. ZenMate secures your browsing with encryption - protecting you from hackers, snoopers and data thieves who prey on unsecure connections.
anonymoX
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... 91efa10e2c
Easy anonymous web browsing.
– Change your IP-Address and country
– Visit blocked or censored websites.
– Delete cookies, show your public ip, and more

We provide the proxy servers, no external proxies or other programs required

Some good ones in there, specifically the soundcloud and epub reader.

It's more about having a super simple way to disable several newer services some purists have had misgivings about. I mainly just really dislike Pocket (apart from the privacy/open source issue, their iOS client is total junk) and don't really have a use for WebRTC.

Gorhill, creator of the popular uBlock Origin content blocker has released the first WebExtension version of uBlock Origin for Firefox.
...Firefox will stop supporting classic add-ons at one time in the not so distant future, and focus on WebExtension instead.

I was pretty hard on this service in a previous entry so I thought I'd note that the program has been purchased by Mozilla and will be going open source, which is great news.

Initially mentioned by Freakazoid (and Ghacks), one of my favorite plugins Multifox has gone away for reasons unknown but the Firefox Test Pilot system Containers has appeared to take its place. Most people will use the program to allow logging into multiple instances of the same website (e.g. multiple Gmail accounts) but it also distinguishes Firefox from Chrome by making separate, distinct online identities that don't know about each other. So for example if you visit a medical website and your insurance company, an ad services cookie can't build a connection between the two.

One of the connections I spend a lot of time on lately has some connection issues so I went looking for a better Youtube downloader. I tested ~10 different tools both in and out of the browser, and found I most recommend the Youtube Video and Audio Downloader by InBasic.

EDIT: This was pointing to another downloader creator who makes Bulk Media Downloader: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... serprofile

There's a Firefox Color pilot program (Ghacks discussion, Official Post) that I was sure was a dumb idea but I was surprised how much I enjoyed setting up themes.

Some I came up with:

Brown Theme: https://color.firefox.com/?theme=XQAAAA ... rEJ_9VfYAA

Chill Gray https://color.firefox.com/?theme=XQAAAA ... gSp_57H4AA

Batch downloading

webfork wrote: Sat Apr 11, 2015 11:28 am DownThemAll - great for scraping a webpage for all it's resources, again important on our intranet which has a bunch of annoying, internally-developed scripts that interfering with basic browser usage.
This add-on was among my favorites and I didn't realize how much I'd miss it, but I was pleased to see that Simple Mass Downloader is really coming along. It may not have all the functionality of my previous favorite DownThemAll, but at least in terms of UI, it's excellent.

I know there's been quite a bit posted on the site about download managers that are browser-independent but unfortunately I have a need for something that is built-in. Essentially there's a file server I often use that has some unfriendly, browser-based integration that other tools wouldn't work with (or I couldn't figure it out).

Also, the included rename function (so far untested) looks really sharp.

Wishlist:
  • Right-click hashing (primarily looking for SHA256 and VirusTotal lookup, but MD5 and SHA1 would be nice too).
  • Ability to download multiple layers for site mirroring (ala HTTrack)
Website: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ownloader/

Containers for every site

Another tweak for containers: rather than having a separate, specialized plugin (like Google Container or Facebook Container), or manually selecting a different container for an activity (shopping, banking, personal, etc.), you can point specific sites to specific containers. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ansitions/

I'd really like to see this integrated into the default behavior.

ZenMate Security & Privacy VPN
ZenMate Security became a bit laggy, so I prefer TunnelBear instead.

Singlefile - has saved my tail several times now, letting me keep data I find without jumping through a bunch of hoops. When you find good information, this grabs it all. I could just as easily post this under the Intranet Search thread because, once you find it, there's no guarantee you'll find it again. The best program I've found to easily edit the output is SeaMonkey's Composer tool, but LibreOffice also works well. There are also a lot of options under the hood.

It's a bit like PrintEdit, but for just grabbing everything rather than just making it more digestible for a printer by cleaning up formatting and images.

There is also a version that includes basic compression (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... nglefilez/), but there are some caveats on the FAQ page: https://github.com/gildas-lormeau/Singl ... ter/faq.md

So a quick update on my current list of Firefox add-ons. Some of these have already been discussed, but just by way of a current configuration snapshot.

Link / tab / URL managment
  • Foxytab - After I put links into the browser, sometimes I have to get them out. This program does a lot of things but my favorite thing is grabbing lists of links. A lot of the site resources index page was built using this add-on.
  • Bulk URL Opener - I have to open and check a LOT of links as part of a QA process and this helps me do that quickly.
  • SEO Minion - really just use the link checking function. I use it a lot here on the site.
Privacy/Security
  • Firefox Multi account containers - helps me group activities and avoid overlap
  • Facebook container - Firefox's effort to close off Facebook from other websites
  • Google Container - A project to basically mimic the above add-on, but for Google
  • Decentralize - general tracking protection
  • HTTPS Everywhere - try to always enable secure connections. Not as necessary as it was even a few years ago, but still ideal.
  • uBlock Origin - very reliable and effective content blocker.
  • Privacy Badger - more tracker blocking, might be duplicating the work of Decentralize, I'm not sure. It's from EFF.org.
Media
  • Enhancer for Youtube - it's not necessary but it has some nice extras and seems to be well-maintained
  • Firefox color - I have several configurations of Firefox, so giving separate instances of the program a different overall look can help remind me which version I'm using. Also just enjoy the available options.
  • Imagus - Auto-zoom images. Sometimes it gets in the way but now every other browser seems to be broken when i can't hover over an image and see the full view.
Search
  • Regex Search - There are some other great regex tools but for whatever reason this one seems to work the best.
  • Find and Replace for Text Editing - Love this program but for some reason doesn't work on one of my installs.
Downloaders
  • Simple mass downloader - My current batch link downloader of choice.
  • Single File - Grab a whole web page and all components. Wonderful for archiving.
  • Youtube Audio and Video Downloader - Still the best download program I've come across, especially as loads of music I love is still only available on Youtube.

Privacy Badger? Isn't that the one that "learns" which beacons or webbugs to block? IIRC I dumped it because it never ever, not even once, caught anything, as uBlock Origin does such a good job of blocking all those webbugs before PB can even notice them.

Re: Best Firefox add-ons (AdNauseam)

#60 Post by Midas »

Today I found a new(-ish) add-on that got me pretty excited, as it appears to go beyond mere ad-blocking and is based upon uBlock Origin, my current goto for this job...
As online advertising becomes ever more ubiquitous and unsanctioned, AdNauseam works to complete the cycle by automating ad clicks universally and blindly on behalf of its users. Built atop uBlock Origin, AdNauseam quietly clicks on every blocked ad, registering a visit on ad networks' databases. As the collected data gathered shows an omnivorous click-stream, user tracking, targeting and surveillance become futile.

In fact, if you click the "u" ('miu') button on the left bottom corner of AdNauseam's dashboard, you will be greeted by the familiar uBlock Origin interface, as shown below...

LifeHacker review at https://lifehacker.com/1846337139; and regarding the included uBlock Origin functionalities included, the following article may also prove useful:
AdNauseam's FAQ (reading highly recommended!) resolved my main doubt of whether I should keep uBlock Origin -- the answer is negative -- but after installation it showed a listing of issues it found with my Firefox (v86.0) configuration in its dashboard, a feature I appreciate very much, thank you.

AdNauseam is currently v3.9.201, released 2020-09-02, and can be installed directly from addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adnauseam/.
