For those of you moving away from a Windows environment that don't want to gamble with functionality on a few key Windows-only tools, this might be an effective route.
WinApps is:
Also, because it uses RDP, it's conceivable you could run programs on a separate machine to avoid soaking all your RAM with a VM.... an easy, one command way to include apps running inside a VM (or on any RDP server) directly into GNOME as if they were native applications. WinApps works by:
Running a Windows RDP server in a background VM container
Checking the RDP server for installed applications such as Microsoft Office
If those programs are installed, it creates shortcuts leveraging FreeRDP for both the CLI and the GNOME tray
Files in your home directory are accessible via the \\tsclient\home mount inside the VM
You can right click on any files in your home directory to open with an application, too
I'd normally make some plug about how portable applications will do better in environments such as this, but I'm not sure there's a significant benefit in this case. Maybe the WinApps people to include a few pre-configured portable applications saved to the temp folder for testing, since the other programs mentioned are commercial (MS Office).
