With that going around as long as they are saying, MS should just release the source so projects like ReactOS can use it to possibly make their project more secure. Although, I don't see that happening.

Here's what I was going to write a few days ago:
Depending on how much money Microsoft makes in the next 10 years on their cloud operation, I can see them opening some part of their operating system similar to Android, but XP is probably off the table for licensing reasons.
It's a shame too because that was certainly the most successful Windows operating system and in some ways the most successful operating system ever. And all that good code either got moved to the latest OS or was basically trashed.
Here's why that's not really relevant anymore:
I don't see them encouraging leaks by actually opening up their source code, but who knows?
---
EDIT: by "opening the source code", I mean that enable it's legal use, since obviously it's "open".

I don't follow how that's really relevant for anything.
The biggest thing the article mentions is that Windows XP had a theme that looked like the Mac OS X "Aqua" theme. And then it points out that it was most likely just a placeholder theme Microsoft engineers used for testing the theme engine and it was never intended to ship. That's complete non-news.

More noting that the cat is out of the bag in terms of the code -- I just linked to engadget topically because they're (usually) good tech info.

In that case, I disagree with your claim that the topic of open sourcing Windows "isn't relevant anymore" after the code leak. The code out there can't legally be used for anything (studying how Windows works, exploit research, etc.)
It's primarily useful for illegal use, i.e. researching vulnerabilities and selling them to the highest bidder.

I don't know if this may be relevant to this forum thread, but
here is a link to the blog of someone that runs a lot of software (mainly games) under XP that
SHOULD NOT RUN on it.
It seems he uses a toolset to temper with the targeted binaries to make'em run under XP...

The technical details are interesting to me in any case.
