WinToHDD & WinToUSB (Windows install utilities)

#1 Post by Midas »

Freeware WinToHDD (currently v1.1) & lightware WinToUSB (v2.8') are not portable per se -- although the later (first mentioned at http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 704#p69704) can be used to create a portable Windows on a pendrive.

E.g., these utilities might prove handy in context of specialized procedures (as discussed in http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=21885, http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=7701, and http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... hp?t=10887).

WinToUSB also supports creating a bootable WinPE USB drive, it can help you transfer the contents of WinPE to a USB drive and make the drive bootable.

Never heard about these softwares you mentioned. What attract me is the in the WinToUSB: run Windows operating system on a USB hard drive or USB flash drive, using an ISO/WIM/ESD/SWM image file or CD/DVD drive as the source of installation. A bit like VMWare workstation 12 player does, but you need the software to run the OS. Always interested to have a distros disk for any OS. Could create a Portable USB disk with all the portable apps necessary to repair a system for example. Or a clone for emergency (disaster on system disk). Cool find, thanks Midas.

I know I am very late to answer this one, but hey I am new to this forum after all.

As today after verifying if the links still works and they do:

WinToUSB is V2.8
... to create portable Windows 10/8.1/8/7!

For advanced users, I believe RMPrepUSB (http://www.rmprepusb.com/) would be the adequate power tool -- its program site is loaded with information and tutorials.

RMPrepUSB SoftPedia review is at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boo ... pUSB.shtml...

Last I checked (over a year ago), RMPrepUSB was still not portable. Have you tested it recently?

  • That's a negative, Baas, sorry. Which doesn't fully preclude its fitness to purpose, IMHO. :)
