For those who dream of acquiring a Synology NAS but lack the financial stamina, a solution may be available if you're unafraid to put on your tinkerer/hacker garb...

General hardware requirements:

* 2GB USB pendrive
* ITX Motherboard LGA1155;
* Dual Core Intel CPU G860 3 GHz;
* Corsair RAM DDR3 1333
* WD Green HDD
* ITX box to hold everything
(Items average EUR 50 each; one tester reports he was able to purchase everything by the grand-total of EUR 270)

The resulting contraption is said to be able to emulate a Synology DS3612xs 12 bay NAS, on sale at Amazon for almost USD 3K (see http://amzn.com/B0078RG3WM)...
