i would assume it will stop updating.. im not sure.. i have never let it run down to expiration..

if you're not a fan of ESET and or determined to keep finding freebies.. it might not be a good choice..

im faithful to ESET 5.. and refuse to update..
ESET 6 is too heavy..

ESET 5 is so light i barely know it's running..
another option i love is the ability to "Ignore".. which is very important.. most freeware AV simply quarantine w/out asking.

FYI
there are sites that offer free "offline" updates which you can then manually update.. but i cannot verify the safety in that..
