XnViewMP - image manager

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

XnViewMP - image manager

#1 Post by webfork »

[Moderator note: this thread was split from the XnConvert thread... and subsequently added to an existing topic, so the resulting conversation flow might appear slightly mangled.]
---------

Name confusion: so its just XnConvert on the website, but this post lists something called XnView MP: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=21616

The XNView MP is listed as "Standalone" which may imply that its natively portable, but I didn't test.

Anyway, thinking the "MP" bit is a different program, so I changed it.

XnViewMP - image manager

Has anyone messed with XnViewMP? Just downloaded the ZIP version and will try to test soon.
XnViewMP is the enhanced version to XnView. It is a powerful cross-platform media browser, viewer and converter. Compatible with more than 500 formats.
It's also out for Mac and Linux.

(Also making this the official forum thread for XnView.)

Unzipped and started XnViewMP (v0.69 x64 on Win7x64sp1), I got this window:

Image

I modified the settings like you see in the image above and an empty XnView folder was still created in AppData and an empty registry key still appeared. However, I removed them and on second startup (after the setting files were already created in app's folder) they did not get recreated.

Note: Trolltech registry keys are left behind, as this is a Qt based app.

P.S. XnViewMP (MP = Multi Platform) is indeed a nice app, seems a little bit more polished than the regular XnView app and offers a 64-bit version... I wonder if XnView has its days numbered (I think so).

XNViewMP review

I was looking for a program to really dig into and learn and this was just the ticket. Spent some time on another amazing addition to freeware. Since the word feature rich comes up quite often so I'm going to take a different tack on this one: I've been looking for something to help replace the MS Office Photo Editor (the 2010 version though since 2003 they've all been about the same). PhotoScape is fantastic but it's ultimately more of a feature-rich image editor rather than a image manager and I find some of the basic operations a little cumbersome; even photographers often won't open up photoshop to just crop vacation photos.

Compared to MS Office Photo Editor
  • The resize component is great. I've been looking for something this easy to use for a while now.
  • Color correction tools are a bit better
  • I couldn't figure out how to crop images. It didn't seem to respond to mouse edits. Think this might be a bug.
  • Batch operations aren't as simple (in fact they're powerful and really cool, but not quite a replacement for the MS Photo Editor)
  • Not very intuitive
Status: Portable (as Joby already mentioned), given that you answer all the prompts correctly:

Image

Steath: no: writes trolltech junk to registry but otherwise seems portable
Also writes empty key in HKU\...\Software\XnView

Other feature notes

Awesome
  • The view and filtering options alone are impressive. If I saw a viewer with just those features, I'd be very impressed.
  • Excellent search tool with tons of search criteria, support for regular expressions, even similar content. If you have a TON of pictures on your drive and want to organize and manage them, you want this program.
  • File type support, both read and write (stunning ... only competition here is LibreOffice)
Good
  • Good interface, clear what everything does
  • Batch rename
  • Web, email, FTP upload (only supports a few image host sites unlike ShareX)
  • Another great front-end for ExifTool
  • Screen capture and web capture tool
  • Ability to quickly and easily create multi-page files in TIFF, PDF, Photoshop, and other formats.
  • The "categories" tool is the first metadata writer I've seen that I might actually use
  • Lossless transformations by default
Gripes (minor stuff, might just be me)
  • Can't figure out what the Auto Correct menu in Options does
  • Had trouble finding the slideshow delay settings
  • Not very intuitive - just like XnView standard, I always preferred Faststone Photo just because it seemed to work how I expected it to. (A video intro might fix this.)
  • No included help file (I know for some folks this isn't a problem)
  • Wish I could switch Categories over to Rating (also a cool metadata editor)
  • Screen capture features were a bit basic, which is only strange because everything else in this program is so numerous
Cons
  • Requires a larger screen - there's a lot of small windows packed into one (see screencap)
  • I couldn't seem to get the thumbnails to increase in size even after selecting "rebuild thumbnails" ... they just got bigger and more blocky. I tried using WEBM without success here.
Other bits I gotta look into at some point in the future:
- Supports JPEG-XR, which appears to be the latest version of JPEG
- Has an interesting open JPEG-2000 read/write library.

Yep ... also it looks like my merge effort failed for some reason ... will get back to that ...

Edit: both fixed

That question was answered twice in this thread. One of the answers was even directed at you!

http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 687#p66687
http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 126#p72126

So, XnViewMP is portable but not stealth.

XnViewMP 0.76 has been releases. What I don't like about XnViewMP is that it uses 3 times more memory than XnView (over 150 MB- I am referring to the x64 portable version- which I think is too much).

XnView MP 0.98 has been released. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. XnView Classic is 32-bit only.

joby_toss and webfork mentioned the portability settings in the Startup Wizard. You can also access the portability settings later:
Tools > Settings > Integration > Paths

The program’s Catalog and Thumbnails databases store data about images. The images may be on the user’s local storage. An alternative is to store the images, and even the databases, on one or more network drives. The Windows Map Network Drive facility, the Net Use command, or other methods can be used to assign an available drive letter to a network storage space, which may be on the Internet. When this is done for the databases, the database settings can then be configured in XnView MP with a Custom path.
