DropboxPortableAHK

#1 Post by Ruby »

Haven't tested yet, but I figured I'd post it because I know a lot of people are interested.
The Archive (~15 MB) contains the Dropbox binaries/runtimes.

From the Author:
Hey guys,

The last few days I was searching for a working portable version of dropbox, but I haven't found one, which is up anymore, all of them are discontinued.
So I decided to create my own portable version and called it DropboxPortableAHK, as it is based on the AutoHotkey language.

It's portable enough for me (the reg entries left behind are not relevant - "...\Shell\MuiCache" and "...\Explorer\MountPoints2"). I'm still using the JPE version, though. :)

great! i was just looking for a working, updated version :)

everything works, but there was a slight glitch at the end of installation, it was asking for the Dropbox folder but it wasn't created yet with no exit and crashed, weird, but it works in the end.

thanks!

Ghacks note on this program:
http://www.ghacks.net/2011/03/14/dropbo ... tallation/

Edit: This program also gets around the issue with Dropbox always wanting to name the directory \Dropbox away from the old style of \My Dropbox. It might seem minor, but when you have all your program links set up with "My Dropbox", changing it is very annoying.

It should be noted (because I couldn't find on the official site) that this uses Dropbox V1.1.45.0 and not the latest version due to massive changes to the DB.

Don't want to be stirring any pots, but I can't believe our gurus didn't see this as a worthy addition for the database -- I deployed it today and promoted it to my new best friend... :D

Does it work with the latest version of Dropbox?

It does work with the latest version of the DropBox service, but not with the latest version of the DropBox client software. As far as I know, something changed in the client after a certain version that broke portability. On first launch, it downloads a copy of the last version that supported portability — that was DropBox 1.1.45.

This is why I didn't add it, purely on the fact it still uses an old version of Dropbox which leaves your config file open to potential attack.

I observed the same at my end...

Not really sure if older Dropbox versions are a security liability; IMHO they have just been adding new features since the version DPAHK uses. For instance:
http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=61042 wrote:1.4.7

* Fix missing translations.

1.4.6

* Fix importing of files larger than 2GB on OS X.
* Better handling of the "never from this device" option on Windows.
* Fix for infinite syncing on really really long paths.

1.4 (Codename: Phoenix Down) Features

* Importing of photos from cameras, phones, and SD cards.
* Batch upload/download of files.
Still, if you're concerned with the security of DropboxPortableAHK, its options and execution can be locked by setting a password (not your Dropbox folder, mind you; if you want that, you'll have to encrypt it yourseld; I suggest using TrueCrypt to create an encrypted volume...). YMMV, though... :mrgreen:
