Wanted to review this program and some experiments and resulting conclusions that came out of it:

Uses:
  • Security - this is a great extra step to keep secure files invisible to basic attacks or to those accidentally coming across something on a system. For example:
    • Hiding data in plain sight on a shared computer
    • Putting information somewhere no one is likely to look: inside boring vacation pictures / desktop wallpaper
Often the presence of an encrypted zip file involves a conversation with your parent, spouse, or children. Jpg+FileBlender mainly helps avoid that conversation.
  • Distribution - useful for posting something to various email, web, or cloud services that have file type limitations. For example:
    • Allowing you to can distribute a zip file via an image-hosting site
    • Send a zip file that includes an EXE file to someone in GMail

Security note:

It should be assumed that this is not adequate against law enforcement or a skilled attacker. In this case, using encryption offered by 7zip or WinRAR and a strong password (20+ characters) is likely the only real security step. My recommended security settings:
  • Use 7-zip, add a password, and choose "Encrypt file names" from the password menu.
  • Avoid creating files clearly larger than they should be. e.g. a tiny image that's 100 megs is either suspect or might be seen as a file error and simply deleted. As some uncompressed JPG files can be enormous, larger images are probably less suspect.
  • If you can't control physical access to your computer, you may also wish to wipe files added to the archive and clear temp directory. (For these tasks, I like CyberShredder and BleachBit respectively.)
Test details:
  • With a 7z file - had to open up using 7zip, it doesn't auto-detect that it's a 7z file
  • 7z file - encrypted - same as 1, but asks for a password only when you move something out of the archive
  • 7z file - encrypted both the archive and file names - same as 1, but immediately prompts for a password
  • Standard zip file - treated like standard zip file
  • Encrypted zip file - same as 2
  • Truecrypt container named as a ZIP file - failure - TrueCrypt didn't recognize the file.
System treats all of the above as a standard jpeg file, even creating a thumbnail. It opens normally inside 7zip. All files above uploaded to Google Drive without issue and were treated just like standard image files.

Google and Yahoo mail tests

I made sure to create files that had an EXE in them to test this. Often email services do not want EXE files distributed and give an error message like this one from Gmail:

(image care of related ghacks article)

Jpg+FileBinder works to get around this limitation. Alternately you can just password-protect a zip or 7z file. Note that Yahoo had no such restriction.

----

Wishlist
  • Support for drag-and-drop for image and zip files
  • Auto-suggest an output picture file name (e.g. new pic1.jpg, new pic2.jpg, etc.)
  • Integrated zip/7z compression (and encryption) so you just add (for example) folder and it puts out an image

Hide My Archive

Hide My Archive Link
"Access denied" message.

This was the result on FireFox & IE PeerBlock is active and my IP is an American IP.

Went back to Link using a German Proxy and Bingo no problem.

The website was all in Russian? and no obvious way to conveniently switch to English.

Tried using Google Translate without a proxy and NO GO.

With a Proxy it failed again.

To see the Access Denied message just use a proxy giving you a US IP.

Thanks Baas I was able to translate text, just not the webpage.

Possibly a software export restriction??

Or probably the current WAR MONGER$ actions trying to use CIA created/backed/RUN Al Qaeda to frame a Sovereign state allied with Russia has something to do with it??

Not to get political but I do not believe anyone has tried so hard to sell an obvious lie in my entire experience.

I tested Google Translate on the website as well. It doesn't work because the site has a framebreak script. :(

Thanks for that.

Its relevant to blocking US IP's.

The now current events may have an impact on the usually impartial WEB.

Just gave one possible explanation, You may not listen to non US news but most of the world has reason to do more than block IP's

You might try contacting the website Admin etc get a less theoretical explanation.

My Russian? is non existent and Google is not a great way to pass concepts, and Ideas that is hard within a common language.

Most likely the author of Hide My Archive is just paranoid or something.

One link in first post.

"Access denied" message.
The link is in the Link, but no links after that because of the problem mentioned in the quote above.

It may be possible to link through Proxy services, but that seemed a bit excessive.
