I spent ages looking for applications to clean up my downloaded art files full of duplicate pictures. Anyhow the following finds was the result of my search.

Also I was going to add Visipics which is great for processing 1000s of images but that has already been discussed as well.

ImgSearch is portable (no settings are saved), and it's pretty nice. It has a more fleshed-out, more usable UI (IMHO) than Duplicate Detector, and I like its comparison algorithm a little better. It says that some of my TIFF files are corrupted, which is a little odd. I also have some TIFF files that I've converted to JPG (and kept both files), and ImgSearch doesn't list these pairs as duplicates (which Duplicate Detector does). Duplicate Detector has an edge in processing time: both seemed to take about the same amount of time for an initial comparison, but Duplicate Detector does a two-stage comparison and caches the first, so that changing the threshold or other settings and then re-comparing is much, much faster. However, ImgSearch was able to put four similar photos into a single comparison group, rather than show six
pairwise comparisons, as Duplicate Detector does.
DPF saves (minimal) settings to the registry, but it has a "Remove settings from registry" checkbox. Of the apps listed here, this is my least favorite. The interface is not well thought-out. The default settings include exceptions for folders named "lingerie" and "swimsuits", which is mildly amusing.
Not portable - saves settings to %AppData%.

the accountant's post was opportune for me.
I had a number of image files in which I thought there would be some duplicates.
Taking note of ashghost's comment, I used ImgSearch.
It worked very well indeed and although not particularly fast it did the job!
It found several that were in different folders and of different sizes.
I liked the fact that you could take action while the program was proceeding.

For lack of a better alternative, made this the official forum thread of Dup Detector.

@tproli
Dup Detector is a good candidate for YAP treatment.
