I just tested out the file server included with the software last night and its great. Simple, easy, and fast. Problems streaming video over the network were completely solved when I used VLC to stream something over HTTP. Very cool.

Just added the software to two server categories:

An application that still works well and hasn't been updated in 4 years can only be a good sign that it was designed very well.

They took out the HTTP and ETP/FTP? While I didn't use those often, I did use them (as mentioned in my earlier post on this thread).

Agree with Midas - I use this program at least 3x a week.

[....]
ETP/FTP/HTTP servers were removed due to time constraints.
They may be added as an addon at a later date.
Well I can say "me too", perhaps all hope is not lost.
[...] Everything is still intended for administrative use, but there is now some functionality when run without administrative privileges.

You will need to use folder indexing when running Everything without administrative privileges, which is a little slower than ntfs indexing and real time monitoring is not as reliable as ntfs monitoring.
Good news for those who have limited accounts/capabilities. :P

So the server components appear to have not actually been removed (or came back?) in 1.2.1.371. I'm confused, but glad to see it.

In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the History tab.

This allows the Everything search client to run with out administrative privileges.

How can I start or stop the Everything service?
The Everything service can be started or stopped from Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

How is the Everything service started?
Windows automatically starts the service at system start-up.
The service is launched by running Everything.exe with the -svc command line option.

You can specify the port with -svc-port <port>, for example:

Code: Select all

Everything.exe -svc -svc-port 12345
Running the Everything service this way does not modify the system.

The Everything service has no interface.
Use Task Manager to terminate the service application when it is no longer needed.

You can close the portable service application easily by making a batch file that runs Everything.exe -svc
Simply close the console window to terminate the service application.
