K-Meleon (alternative engine web browser)

#1 Post by BigD »

Firefox users might be pleasantly surprised at just how fast K-Meleon loads and runs in comparison. With the 1.0b5 beta release of the new K-Meleon SeaMonkey, portable K-Meleon is even easier to use than before.
Supports similar hardware/software to Firefox, as it is based on the same rendering engine, but is Windows-only - hence faster.

For portable K-Meleon, please visit http://kmeleon.uk.to and try out the new Pocket K-Meleon. Your comments will be most welcome.

I have problems downloading the software from RapidShare. I keep getting this message:
Download-session invalid. Please click here.

Possible reasons:

* Download-session expired. Direct-links last a few minutes for free users and a few days for premium-users.
* You requested this download-session from a different IP than yours. If you use AOL, try a different browser.

Andrew, sorry to hear you're having difficulty downloading from RapidShare. I've checked and the file is definitely still accessible. I know that you can't use a download accelerator with RapidShare (free service), and I wonder if you are using a proxy of some sort.

If you still can't get a hold of the download, let me know and I'll upload it to RapidUpload.com as an alternative.

Just tried again. Still having problems. I am using Portable Firefox, but just for good measure, I tried Internet Explorer as well without success.

Could you try YouSendIt or equivalent? I have used it many times without much hassle.

I would highly reccommend http://www.savefile.com. It has an easy interface to upload and download files.

Justin - you're welcome! :D
I think I'll change the link to FileLodge on my webpage in case other folk have similar problems to Andrew accessing RapidShare.

(Very!) Old topic update: not Pocket, neither SeaMonkey based, but the OSS K-Meleon Web browser (overview at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Meleon) just got a new(ish) release (74, which would roughly translate to v1.74 in the version numbering of yore): for details and download, see http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read.php?8,129657. I haven't tested it but the 7z package should be readily portable. Trust me, this is a must for tweakers... :twisted:

DL mirrrors: Related TPFC forums topics: Other K-Meleon based projects: Links in prior messages of this topic are pretty much dead, but Pocket K-Meleon stil has an (outdated) entry in TPFC's database (see http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=520)...

Should you feel inclined to get involved with K-Meleon, be advised that the official bugtracker is now at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/flyspray/; the one linked from the homepage is deprecated. Official forums are still active, though.

I've never liked K-Meleon. It's like using a buggier version of Firefox.
is it stealth? ;)

I used it off and on as a somewhat lighter version of Firefox back when my system resources were much more limited. I'm curious about the goal of restarting this particular browser.

I still keep & use several K-Meleon variants:

The very old Pocket-K comes in very handy for viewing sites that are very demanding of resources as it can be made to just load the basic page minus all the flash and other krapola that so many sites insist upon.

It would be great if someone would make a newer version of it IMO.

K-Meleon stable v75 has been released (changelog is at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/changelog.txt).

K-Meleon is natively portable: download the 7z package, unpack and edit the "profile.ini" to insert the following content:

Code: Select all

[profile]
path=profiles
isRelative=1
BTW, Pocket K-Meleon is a special portabilized version that is now is seriously obsolete. For further info on portability, please check:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/ wrote:K-Meleon is an extremely fast, customizable, lightweight web browser based on the Gecko layout engine developed by Mozilla which is also used by Firefox. K-Meleon is free, Open Source software released under the GNU General Public License and is designed specifically for Microsoft Windows (Win32) operating systems.

K-Meleon latest release (currently v75) can be downloaded from http://kmeleonbrowser.org/download.php.
