Found a portable-only software list at vovsoft.com/blog/vovsoft-portable-software-list/ -- but apparently most not free (e.g., Batch Translator)...

No, some pay ones. I have a few actually, I think they are good value for $15. I'm all for simple, reliable utilities.

Also worth mentioning their giveaway page, where they give away paid portable software for free.

VovSoft Screen reader

I'm not giving this it's own thread just because it's missing a few things I really need from a screen reader. Definitely still focused on DSpeech. Still, very impressive freeware.

Status: Portable. Writes to settings.ini

Pros:

* It is SUPER simple. Just hover over text and if the program recognizes it, you'll hear it read.
* Can function as zoom or screen reader program.

Cons:

* It doesn't seem to work with a browser and some programs, which hurts it's effectiveness.
* It works fine with a text file, but doesn't jump forward. If you bump your mouse off a page, it will start over.

Settings view

Zoom View (this shows up where ever you hover the mouse outside of the Screen reader window, then it reverts back to the above)

Vovsoft also has a text to speech option that saves to MP3s. Not sure how I missed that while looking at Screen Reader above.

As with the Screen Reader program, I'm frustrated that it always starts from the beginning (unless you pause and even then you can just unpause). I can't jump ahead to start reading later in the text. Still an excellent tool, but probably won't replace DSpeech.

Usage notes: You can save to 22khz, 16bit audio, Mono settings (as in the image below) and it's 1/3 the size of the default quality settings. I couldn't tell the difference.

Status: Portable, writes to settings.ini

Resources: Because it includes a copy of FFMPEG, it's over 50 megs uncompressed. Uses about 12 megs RAM.

EDIT:

I also tested two other programs in the course of this: Textify Plus and Smart Talk, but neither one did much more than Vovsoft's programs above.

There's currently a 30% site wide offer on, which includes the universal licence. I grabbed that because it includes all current and future releases and for me is a terrific deal. The developers are responsive and their utilities are very useful. I like supporting these kind of companies.

In case anyone's wondering, that universal license amounts to a scrap less than 80 Euros (including taxes, instead of the hundred and odd it would normally cost) and the offer is good up the first of January...
