Book Restorer (call for new entries)

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Book Restorer (call for new entries)

#1 Post by juverax »

Book Restorer is a post-processing tool for scanned documents.
The version discussed here is 4.2.1.0 developed for Windows XP but still working fine with Windows 10.
It is a small program (installer: 11Mb, installed application: 40Mb).

Usefulness:
Works in batch and interactive mode.
Excellent at straightening skewed, warped and wavy lines.
Includes basic graphic editing capabilities for each page.
There is a learning curve, and there is no help because the original website is defunct.
First you must create a "book" (a project), then you insert the pages.
Then you select tools in the tool box to apply modifications to a specific page, that can then be saved ("published") individually.
Being able to work on each individual page is a big plus.
Seems to works fine with color pages.
I personally would use this tool to fix the pages where ScanTailor failed (ScanTailor works mostly in batch mode).

Portability:
So far for what I have seen, it is easy to make Book Restorer portable.
When installing Book Restorer, you get a message saying that it cannot update the registry (!!!!), however the install runs smoothly until the end.
You can then use the application.
If you visit the registry: you can see that Book Restorer has created several entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software. and all these entries start with i2S.
Delete ALL these entries, and continue to use Book Restorer normally.
I also moved the installed program to a USB drive, restarted Book Restorer and it worked normally.
Since then, I did not see any new insertions in the registry.
As a conclusion, as far as I can see, Book Restorer is portable.

Availability:
Book Restorer 4.2.1.0 is available at:
https://getsoft.sibnet.ru/get/?id=17932 and

I found internet links mentioning versions 4.2.5 and 4.2.6, but none have downloadable links.
