I'm really impressed. It looks sharp and they've addressed many of the issues I had with password managers over time. Thanks for posting.

@bitcoin & webfork: I'm inclined to agree -- will have to test further.

KeypassXC multi-platform nature and general compatibility -- as well as with YubiKey -- are strong hooks, IMHO...
KeePassXC is a community fork of KeePassX, a native cross-platform port of KeePass Password Safe, with the goal to extend and improve it with new features and bugfixes to provide a feature-rich, fully cross-platform and modern open-source password manager.

Usage notes: I love that encryption settings are based on time to open. I also really like the password and passphrase generators. A lot of thought went into this.

Resource usage: The program itself is 82 megs, 20 megs of RAM, more than I'd like but sort of expected from cross-platform tools.

Wishlist
  • Drag-and-drop keyfile capability
  • 2FA support - would like to see support for one of the various open source 2FA tools out there.
  • Text file as passwords - one of the problems with key files is that if even one bit is modified, it's useless and all your data is gone. Text files (and their content) are a little easier to keep track of. If something goes awry with the file, it's easy to just focus on the text inside. To be clear, I don't know if this is a problem, it's just something that worries me about file keys.

Topic update: KeypassXC v2.6.0 released (official announcement at keepassxc.org/blog/2020-07-07-2.6.0-released/; full changelog at github.com/keepassxreboot/keepassxc/blob/develop/CHANGELOG.md).

FYI, KeypassXC's Github releases repo at github.com/keepassxreboot/keepassxc/releases.

This is the strongest endorsement yet for the program, IMHO.

now at v2.6.2 (2020-10-21)

seems like it should be added to the database

one of the cooler things i noticed is it has the option to import a website's favicon

Yeah but there are a *lot* of variations on this program. We already have two KeePass entries:

https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2829
https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=194

... with MULTIPLE program variants inside. I don't doubt that KeepassXC is maybe the better one of the pack, but can you suggest something that wouldn't confuse visitors?

Thanks for the program update.

well to me its a solid program and there are only 10 in the category

if it was me i would merge the other 2 since they're the same project anyway - not a big deal though

Again, it's less about the quality of this program in particular or the existing category items, more about 3 similarly named programs.

That would be one approach, especially since there's less resistance to dotnet applications than there was when this program was first discussed.

Any other opinions here?

I vote to add as a separate entry, and provide some details about the differences from the other entries.

Currently, we have:

- KeePass Classic (grand-daddy, Windows native, very old)
- KeePass Professional (aka V2; successor, dotnet, current mainstream)
- KeePassXC (cross-platform, native, successor to KeePassX with same goals)

If we had an entry for KeePassX, I could suggest replacing it with KeePassXC.

But since we don't, I think creating a new entry is fine by me.
