KuKnet FileRenamer

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Preamble
Oftentimes very capable freeware programs remain unnoticed and this is one of the reasons why people purchase commercial software when there are equally good or even better free alternatives. I do believe that one does not need to spend money on commercial renaming tools since one can achieve the same or better results with free tools. I found the market preposterous- some developers try to sell abandoned, archaic, primitive, very poor products (Oscar's Renamer PRO), other commercial ones do not support Unicode and the developers refuse to release a Unicode version (Flash Renamer), other products are nothing special (Professional Renamer), ridiculously priced (Rename Expert) or have freeware background (ReNamer). I am not a renaming expert but yet I think that buying any of these products is not justifiable (if the user is not a software collector) since there are many free tools which can do all kinds of remaining jobs in an easy way. I have tested and used many free renamers (both portable and non-portable) and most of them have pleased me. One such tool which is vastly unknown but fairly flexible is the one I am going to review below- KuKnet FileRenamer.

First of all let me state - a first class entry!
I particularly liked the preamble - spot on.
But for me - thanks but no cigar.

I gave the product a reasonable test but struggled. I could insert or delete at a specific location but could not delete odd characters (using eg F2) in some filenames. I found tagging a mystery. My music filenames typically include artist and title but I need to add album, year etc for a comprehensive tag. And although I'll accept that I might have missed some points but I have no problem using TagScanner.
I have no doubt that this should be added to the directory but it's not for me.
I'll continue to use Flash Renamer. smaragdus is right in that it unfortunately does not support Unicode but I can cope with that.
I hope that members will comment and suggest where I might be going wrong.

@smaragdus

Thanks for bringing up the remarkable KuKnet FileRenamer utility.

Excellent illustrated write-up, coupled with a judicious rationale commending free vs commercial software. (albeit akin to preaching the local choir... :wink: )

KFR tool added to my "File Renaming" preferred utilities, which includes another lean, nifty entry: "Pintosoft's FocusOn Renamer"

Will gladly vote for KFR DB inclusion.

@JohnW
I mainly use simple renaming rules- replace, delete, enumeration, which I apply to screen-shots, images downloaded from the web, archives. I never use ID3 (my audio collection does not need renaming) and Exif (I prefer to keep the original names of my photos) renaming rules. The last time I renamed audio files was probably in the time of LimeWire and I used a audio tag editor (as far as I can remember it was TagScanner). So I cannot help with advice. Perhaps the right person who can help you is the developer himself who offers support via mail.

I contacted the developer of FocusOn Renamer requesting a portable version. If i got response I will announce it at the right forum thread.

@smaragdus

Thanks for contacting FocusOn Renamer's developer.

Meanwhile, pending a forthcoming portable, stand-alone zip package:

Quick Install Note:
Currently, FocusOnRenamer1.1 distro is packaged within a setup wizard installer, readily bypassed so:

Code: Select all

C:\>7z x FocusOnRenamer1.1.exe
7-Zip 9.22 beta  Copyright (c) 1999-2011 Igor Pavlov  2011-04-18

Processing archive: FocusOnRenamer1.1.exe

Extracting  $PLUGINSDIR\System.dll
Extracting  $PLUGINSDIR\UAC.dll
Extracting  $PLUGINSDIR\modern-wizard.bmp
Extracting  $PLUGINSDIR\nsDialogs.dll
Extracting  Uninstall.exe
Extracting  foren.exe
Extracting  lpop.exe

Everything is Ok

Files: 7
Size:       588278
Compressed: 289504
(No objectionable traces left in registry after running foren.exe... :))
