Inviska Rename

Preamble
Most renamers I know are either abandoned (and in most cases do not support Unicode), or rarely updated, or tend to become nagware and none of them is cross-platform. I have discovered, tested and used a cross-platform (it runs on Linux, macOS and Windows) open-source and portable one- Inviska Rename. It is easy to use, it seems to be stable, it is still in development and the developer is open to suggestions. I suppose this tool may be useful to those who need to rename files on a regular basis.

Synopsis
Inviska Rename is a batch file rename tool that allows you to give meaningful names to groups of files. It can be used for renaming music files from tags (screenshot), replacing photograph names like DSC04651.JPG with more useful names like "Spain Holiday - 154.jpg" (screenshot), renaming photos from Exif tags (screenshot), and other renaming tasks.
Features
Inviska Rename can perform the following operations:
  • Insert, remove and replace text in filename or extension.
  • Rename using music tag information, such as mp3 ID3v2 tags, FLAC tags and other audio tags.
  • Rename using Exif information from digital photographs.
  • Rename using file creation or modification date.
  • Automatically number files for easy ordering.
  • Change filename to uppercase, lowercase, title case or sentence case.
  • Filter items to be renamed based on extension, selection, files only or folders only.
  • Save common rename settings for frequent tasks.
  • Undo previous rename operation to restore original filenames.
  • Show/hide hidden files to include/exclude them from rename operations.
  • Navigate through directories in preview list to locate the files you wish to rename.
  • Easily see which filenames will be changed with highlighting of modified filenames in the preview pane.
  • View tags present in file (Exif screenshot, Music screenshot) and edit music tags before renaming.
  • Rename in any language thanks to full Unicode support.
  • Cross platform, running on Windows 7+, MacOS 10.10+ and Linux.
  • Free open-source software released under the GPLv2 licence.

I will no longer provide VirusTotal analysis because this service is a privacy nightmare.

Yup, appears to be stealth. The renaming tool I'm using currently (Advanced Renamer) has a rather non-straightforward way to add directories to the input*, so with this program's simple path field and Open Directory menu item I'll probably begin using it. Overall seems to be easier to use. Nice find.

* There's a side tree-style structured pane and one of those old, tree-style popups but no add folder method using the regular open dialog of Windows which allows for path pasting and much faster navigation. The workaround is to use the add files button which does open the latter style window but then you have to select all the files manually.

Hasn't it been acquired by El Googler? It figures...

Nice find, BTW. 8)

I became interested in Inviska Rename some time ago.
I corresponded with the author via his Forum ( I was saishoman).
As a result he made significant improvements to the renamer . However, when it came to tagging I found the program laborious and (for me) difficult. I was the only contributor at that time and just couldn't be bothered.
I still use Flash Renamer. It's not freeware but meets all my needs.
Now that Inviska is being further enhanced I will follow with interest.

Yes.

@FileHandler
You are welcome.

I couldn't know that saishoman were you but I think I supposed that it might be a user from our forum. I didn't join the Inviska Rename forum at the tmes when you were the only contributor because then I didn't have time to test the program thoroughly. As I can see the development continues- the latest unofficial build- Inviska Rename 3.05 (I haven't tested it yet), is from 2018-03-19.

The website is down. I tried to contact the developer but his e-mail address is also inaccessible. I can upload all the versions of Inviska Rename I have (stable plus beta).

I wonder what happened, as the main domain loads a 404 so I'm guessing it's not that the domain name accidentally wasn't paid (though maybe that is still the case). Archive.org only has a single page from March listed and it's a redirect anyway.

Too bad I didn't grab the source code as well at the time.

I think I have all the versions of Inviska Rename (both stable and beta) but i didn't download the source code either. Also I didn't download and test other open source programs by the same developer (they were also portable). It didn't occur to me to archive the page. As far as I can remember once I suggested that the developer might publish his stuff at GitHub but he was reluctant. I think that the developer mentioned he was planning a trip for the beginning of April. I hope that the website will come back online.

Thanks for doing that. I spent some time looking for a suitable mirror and was surprised when I could find nothing. Very odd.

Somehow I found an archive.org link that I couldn't find before:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170831073 ... ortable.7z

Same hash values as what Smaragdus posted, so I guess the archive.org site is our backup mirror.

Inviska Rename is online but the forum is offline- the developer has explained why. I hope his health will get better.

I did a brief testing of Inviska Rename version 4.0 (history)- this release seems bug-free and stable.

That sounds terrible  Do hope he recovers fully.
