Looks to be optional. I've never encountered it myself in either install though.

Not on the portable version. Also, with the installed version, it's very easy to disable.

Vivaldi 3.0 is out. Vivaldi Technologies has introduced a built-in ad and tracking blocker, ability to seek videos in Picture-in-Picture mode and a timer feature: https://vivaldi.com/blog/1-day-2-big-vi ... -releases/

Meh,.... I dislike these non-portable chrome "spin-offs". The only portable chrome derivatives I've seen that retain settings are:
Cent Browser and Slim Browser version 10.

Vivaldi Portable Redux:

At first I tried to (Uni)extract Vivaldi installer only to get a 'setup.exe' file which Uniextractor2 couldn't chew.

Then, I ran the downloaded installer package (62MB for x64), clicked "Advanced", selected "Install Standalone" under "Installation Type", chose local path to a new "Vivaldi" folder on my Desktop and ended up with two sub-folders inside: "Application" and "User Data".

The former contains two executables, 'vivaldi.exe' and 'update_notifier.exe'; the second is where user profiles reside.

Having done this twice already, I can say the procedure always ends by auto-running the browser un-prompted, which I find really irksome because it immediately leaves traces in the system registry (mainly in 'HKCU\Software\Vivaldi') and '%APPDATA%\Vivaldi'.

I proceed then to erase those traces -- as well as the 'update_notifier.exe' and the 'SetupMetrics' folder present inside 'Application' that aren't required for running the browser.

Next I placed a yaP launcher in my upper level 'Vivaldi' folder with the following configuration:

Code: Select all

; configuration file for yaP v0.7.1.5 (http://yap.rolandtoth.hu/)
; application name: Vivaldi Standalone
; version: v3.1.1929.34
; website: https://vivaldi.com/

[GENERAL]
application = Application\vivaldi.exe

; commandline =
; workdir =

[BEFORE]
regkey = HKCU\Software\Vivaldi

; dir = %Appdata%\Dir
; file = %Appdata%\Dir\File.ini
; regkey = HKCU\Software\RegKey

[AFTER]
-dir = %AppData%\Vivaldi
-file = %USERPROFILE%\.vivaldi_reporting_data
-regkey = HKCU\Software\Google\Chrome

...
As noted previously, upgrading this portable setup is a matter of going to its 'Application' folder and replacing 'vivaldi.exe' and the version numbered sub-folder with the ones from an updated version.

Issues left to check/solve: portability of passwords/extensions...

BTW, prior posts I recommend reading in the current topic (in chronological order):

Should you care about what the complete final folder structure looks like, I posted it to https://i.postimg.cc/pXYG1FL7/hierarchy.png...

Quick note to confirm that -- following zorro's comment in Vivaldi's database entry -- I also found yet another leftover at '%USERPROFILE%\.vivaldi_reporting_data'.

The last file content is as follows -- note the unique userID:
{"description":"This file contains data used for counting users.
If you are worried about privacy implications, please see
https://help.vivaldi.com[ ]/article/how-we-count-our-users/",
"installation_time":"13236781422000000",
"next_daily_ping":"13236870901512444",
"next_monthly_ping":"13239376501512000",
"next_weekly_ping":"13237389301512444",
"unique_user_id":"078E340C3F925436"}

yaP launcher config above updated.

Topic update: Vivaldi Stable v3.4 (build 2066.76) released 2020-10-21.

There's isn't any straight old-school changelog, only a mishmash of announcements and blog posts... :confused:

https://vivaldi.com/changelog-vivaldi-3-4-on-desktop/
https://vivaldi.com/blog/three-cheers-t ... n-arrives/

Further good news: while manually updating my (so-called 'portable') copy, I noticed that Uniextractor2 now recognizes the installer and easily unpacks it to a 'vivaldi.7z' archive, which can then be further extracted to yield the relevant files for updating (as detailed above), circumventing those irksome impromptu launches. Hooray! :innocent:

You can use the built-in updater to update a portable copy (Help -> Check for Updates...). Doing so won't disable portable mode.

Quick post to note that the internal updater will stop working if you remove 'update_notifier.exe'.

Obvious -- but only as an afterthought... :roll:
