NumericalChameleon - unit conversion

#1 Post by smaragdus »

NumericalChameleon synopsis:
The NumericalChameleon is free, open source, platform-independent and comprehensive software in order to convert units with a precision of up to 1000 decimal places.

It supports more than 5200 units in 93 categories, including not only all important physical units in categories like length, area, volume, electricity, magnetism, force, power, energy, pressure, mass, temperature, velocity, acceleration, radioactivity, fuel consumption, time, etc. but also useful units in non-standard categories like exchange rates, time zones, spoken numbers (literally and by audio), roman numerals, geographic coordinates, radixes, fractions, checksums, bits&bytes, screen resolutions, colorcodes, unicodes, international dial codes, calendar and holiday calculations and many more.

It can be run as portable app or as an installed app it can be run on single and multi-user environments in networks on all supported platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Unix, etc.) locally or on the network.

It provides a dynamic, modern graphical user interface. It has been internationalized and localized in many languages. You have unlimited access on all categories, units, icons, filters and themes. You can add, modify, hide or delete them. All configuration data are stored in flat files. Since the format of the output can be configured, data exchange with other software is easy.

Looks interesting. I do love the license and cross platform status so I'll give this a shot.

I'm also happy to see someone build a java program and list it as “portable”. Most Java developers I've seen only use the term “portable” as to it's capability to run on multiple platforms (which is supposed to be baked-in but evidently not assured). Here at least if I get into a discussion with a developer I can point to another program that has it.

I do wish the author would use something a little more effective than ZIP for some of the larger distros. Also, 414 megs for the cross-platform desktop-friendly version (not just JAR launch) is just too big for a converter program.

@webfork
This program is robust and well-designed- for example even from splash-screen at start-up one can see that it is running in portable mode.
In Preferences-> Exit Options one can deselect "Ask Before Exit" which is checked by default.
I suppose that the developer (Johann N. Löfflmann) can be contacted for suggestions and feedback via his Impressum page which is in German but the e-mail address is clearly visible.

I've been using this recently and have to concur: it's pretty impressive. Granted I haven't used a lot of these unit converter programs (online sites normally work fine), this is probably one of the most comprehensive ones around. I'm particularly fond of the time and date calculating functions - very useful for doing video editing work. Thanks for submitting :)
