If you can be sure it will make it to final, yes I agree here.

Still I tested it and it works fine for me but some unusual application hanging. Then I found the guilty, and it concerns me. I use Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 and it freezes the software from time to time without throwing false alert or alert at all.

Have all a nice day.

Just put an exception to bitdefender 2015: http://www.bitdefender.com/support/how- ... -1307.html

Regards :)

Thanks for the tip, but already done. :wink:

I am following this software from version to version with great attention. I am pretty sure this would be a major contender to 7zip (which is still as for now my favourite extractor). Thanks for the catch. And thanks to the developer to join in.

Always nice to be able to talk to them freely and having an answer.

Stumble on this: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/02/keep- ... -bvckup-2/ which has nothing to do with the software of this topics (the extractor), but the name attract my attention as bvckup 2 name was mentioned here. :shock:

have a nice day.

Bvckup 2 did make it to final. It's just that the released versions are payware. The developer chose a business model that the Bvckup 2 beta versions are free but do not receive any further bug fixes or improvements. If you want to enjoy the changes the developer has made since then, or just support the author financially, then you should buy the stable version.

Edit: the program interface actually says that it's focused on the extraction of audio and video from common video files so the following audio file tests (M4A, WMA, and MP3) aren't meaningful. The WMV and MP4 files are still good tests.

----

So I ran a few tests on the decompression with media (and a few other files):

WIN
  • M4A - (AAC audio) - worked great
  • DOCX, ODT - worked the same as when decompressing with 7-zip. 98% of users would never do this, but there are some neat things you can do, including data recovery of corrupt data, real compression (above standard zip), and pulling out embedded files.
LOSE
  • MP3 - The program doesn't appear to work with MP3 files. I tried several and submitted something via the program's bug report interface.
  • WMV and WMA - no luck, similar results to MP3 with two very old WMV and WMA files (VLC reports they were created with Windows Media 9 and Windows Media Audio 2 respectively)
  • MP4 - it just extracted to a .h264 file of the same size, I'm guessing pulling it out of the "container" format, rather than really decompressing. This may be intentional, I don't know.
== Probably bad tests ==
  • BIN - no luck
  • MPG - appears to just copy over the file and extract the audio, but this may have been a bad test as the only MPG file I had was without audio or mute

So this Universal Extractor update has been going strong for some time now, the author is responsive, and it's both improving in terms of features and extraction capability. I'm interested in starting to take this program on as a standard for the site but a few things would have to take place here:
  • Actually download and build the program to verify it's status. As a non-developer I need some help doing that.
  • Setup a monthly download. This is no problem to include in a broader monthly backup process I'm already running.
  • Make sure everyone's okay with that. So please speak up if you think this is a bad idea.
Initially we'll just start listing the program in the FAQ alongside the current Uniextract listing and then at some point in the following 6 months switch over to that program and list the original merely as a reference.

Run updater to download MSI bugfix.
Beta 4b is a bugfix update adressing failing msi extractions

Fixed msi extraction when UniExtract is installed in a directory, which contains spaces
Fixed progress indicator for msi extractions
Fixed rare error opening changelog after update
@webfork
What do you mean by build the program? compiling it? Just download the uniextract source zip and download AutoIt. Run Aut2Exe on the .au3 script files. https://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/do ... mpiler.htm. Source doesn't include the 3rd party binaries that's in the bin folder though.

Bioruebe has implemented ability to update the files individually, but hasn't yet released any version with that feature.
