Seymour - photo viewer/organizer

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Seymour - photo viewer/organizer

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Seymour is a free and portable photo viewer/organizer with some basic editing capabilities.

Did you always want a program for browsing images but there was literally no such software available? Don't fret, there's...
Seymour features:
Distinguishing features
- Scripting support to enhance functionality
- Good search features including searching by visual similarity, image features, regular expressions, text search, categories etc.
- Caching to speed up browsing and viewing
- Customizable thumbnail styles for different images
- Highlight/select/tag images according to image features
- Sorting and grouping features
- Tagging (categories assignment) including Copy/Paste/Clear
- Support for the new Waifu2X upscaling method

- Seymour settings:

Seymour portable:
Download Seymour.rar archive, extract it and run Seymour.exe. All settings are stored in INI files in data sub-folder inside Seymour folder. Seymour also creates Seymour.db and Thumbs.db files in program folder. All documentation and scripts can be found in docs and scripts sub-folders.

Seymour license:
Seymour is free but not open-source.

Seymour note:
Seymour is still in early stage of development but it looks very promising. The developer is very friendly, helpful and open to suggestions. Here I would like to thank him for
* Added support for automatic JPEG rotation according to EXIF orientation
(UseEXIFRotation setting in Seymour.ini; enabled by default)
which is an extremely important feature for me. If a folder containing a great number of images is browsed indexing can take a bit longer.

While I never specifically intended Seymour to be portable, it's programming-wise very simple to make it save additional settings to a file instead of registry, so I will make the next version fully portable.

Welcome to the forum. It is always great when developers choose to participate in the discussions here. I suppose that a portable version of Seymour which leaves Windows registry untouched (we call such programs Stealth here) will be much appreciated by the community. A program which does not write to Windows registry is more likely to be added to The Portable Freeware database (http://www.portablefreeware.com/)- I suppose you may find interesting stuff here. Keep the good work on Seymour and thanks for joining the forum.

Thanks for the welcome! Just posting a heads-up - the fully portable/stealth version 0.9.9 of Seymour is now available. Writing to the registry was replaced with writing a Window.ini in the Seymour directory. If the file doesn't exist your previous setup is restored from registry (if applicable) so you retain the settings from a previous version.
In addition, Seymour can now perform reverse image searches from the Internet using Google and the Waifu2X image scaling feature was updated.

Great news and excellent work. I can confirm that Seymour version 0.9.9 retrieved settings from registry and created Window.ini file in program folder. After I deleted Seymour registry strings and restarted Seymour these string were not recreated so it seems that now Seymour is fully portable and stealth.

I have a suggestion- what about adding an option for a slide show? If implemented you may put a slide-show icon in Seymour tool-bar plus a slide show context menu (Play or Slide Show) when the user right-clicks on an image. Also you may add a slide show menu in Seymour settings where the user can define the seconds per slide (interval between images). You may also add options for transition effects (no transition effects, random transition effects, selected transition effects. You may define a hot key for slide show, perhaps CTRL+P (Play) or CTRL+S (Slide Show).

Regards

Thanks for verifying it works as intended. As for the slideshow suggestion, I've personally never seen any use of such a feature (note - personally!), so adding it is not a priority for me, however I think it could be implemented as a script. 'Complex' transition effects (with two different images visible simultaneously) might not be possible for now due to the way Seymour works internally, and I might have to add some timing functions to the scripting engine, but otherwise it should be doable.

I really missed out not testing this program sooner. Very well designed program.

While I know this program probably isn't being worked on anymore but I really liked bits of it so wanted to make some feature requests in the event that it comes back into development:

Main window
* Ability to batch modify screen size (maybe via scripts menu)
* Scripts menu text doesn't fit onto the window on Win7x86
* Metadata editor / removal

Edit view
* CTRL+Z to undo operations
* More save/compression options

Image view
* Inside image view, auto-crop when drawing a rectangle (or similar common function)

... also an open license so maybe someone could carry the program forward would be great.

Update: now at version 0.9.50 (updated 2020-07-24)

Still lots of good rename/tagging/categories features I don't think I've seen anywhere else. Note that it's distributed as a RAR file.
