Stinger

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Stinger

#1 Post by Checker »

I make this the official forum topic for Stinger
Stinger is an utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

I added a warning to the entry.

Of course it does. The only difference in the PortableApps.com version is that it bundles the PortableApps.com Launcher that tried to* make Stinger stealth.

* Since Stinger Portable installs a service, it definitely isn't stealth.

Was about to propose the same, Baas. Currently, active users whose vote makes Stinger visible are:
  • Andrew Lee
  • carbonize
  • guinness
So, I guess two more downvotes to go...

In my opinion Stinger should be removed from the database immediately since now it is a serious threat itself.

I'm not certain it poses a serious threat, but the clandestine installation of a resilient service in the background is hardly what you'd expect from a tool like this. Have also down-voted in the hope it is removed.

Latest version of Stinger reduced file size from 15.458.672 Byte to 9.765.744 Byte.
Does it still install the unwanted Windows service?
... I won't check this out

Tested Stinger x64 v12.1.0.1565 on win7x64sp1:

Raptor is still running after Stinger is closed:

If you hit Exit, you'll get a bunch of leftovers.

If you hit Remove RAPTOR, you'll still get a bunch of leftovers.

'Might be Sandboxie's fault, but hey, who would you trust at this point?! :)

Good news: no trace of mfevtps.exe on my machine.
Bad news: everything else.
