uGet [download manager]

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

I can't really tell from the program description or screenshots if it does anything particularly cool or worthwhile (as compared to Free Download Manager for example). What do you think?

I agree. Although the homepage for this app is surprisingly professional-looking and makes a lot of claims, it would be useful to see some real-world comparisons to FDM (my default DM) or another DM in terms of features, CPU/memory use, integration, etc. Minus that, I'm not too anxious to switch DMs. FDM works fine and has been free forever. Whenever I see a professionally created site suddenly appearing out of the blue, it make me somewhat suspicious. Most of the freeware I use usually has average or even crappy looking homepage sites. I would like to think those developers put more emphasis on the product rather than on the presentation. Don't judge a book .....

Further info (3/8/15):
It looks like this DM was pre-installed on my LXLE system. Since I usually use apt-get, Synaptic, or other built-in toolsfor downloading SW, I wasn't aware that it was there. That means it's been in use for awhile and well accepted, at least with Linux, so its probably FOSS. Explains a lot about the web page then. I haven't tried it in Windows. Still would be nice to see some independent testing and a write-up for the Windows version.

i don't think its any better than FDM but it was the best download manager i had on the linux side for quite a while. i thought it was quite well known to linux users.

@TP109 - its been around on the linux side at least 4-5 years and i remember sending in either a question or a suggestion for improvement in the program and the author was very courteous in reply fwiw.

For me, a DM is more of an essential tool in Windows than for Linux. A DM would become more important if using Linux full-time, but it probably wouldn't be used as heavily.

  • There's some interesting and intelligently written batch download tools and a scheduler
  • There's no torrent integration, but it will launch a separate program for torrent files
There's a few other cool download tweaks and options, but nothing radically improved over FDM.

Portability: untested (I accidentally messed up my testing mechanism)

uGet latest release is v2.0.2, dated 2015-09-12 (changelog up to v2.0.1, dated 2015-08-15, is at http://ugetdm.com/changelog).

The latest version Windows download claims portability, but I didn't test it: http://ugetdm.com/downloads-windows...

Re: uGet 2.0.6 - Portable!

#10 Post by smaragdus »

Since version 2.0.6 uGet is portable:
9. if file "uget-portable-mode" exists, data files save in installed folder. (Windows)
..
* In Windows, If "uget-portable-mode" and "uget.exe" place in the same folder, data files will save in uGet installed folder.
uGet 2.0.6 Download Page

Procedure to make uGet portable:
- download uget-2.0.6-win32+gtk3.7z.
- extract the archive to a folder and open that folder.
- copy/cut uget-portable-mode file and move it to bin sub-folder.
- run uget.exe.
- all data and settings are stored in config folder (uGet\bin\config\uGet) in JSON files.

Screens:
- uGet - main window:
uGet 2.0.6 - 2016-04-02 - 005.png
- uGet - settings window:
uGet 2.0.6 - 2016-04-02 - 002.png
- uGet - new download:
uGet 2.0.6 - 2016-04-02 - 004.png
Changes in uGet 2.0.6:
uGet 2.0.6: (2016-04-01)
1. curl plug-in: fix a bug that downloaded file may be incomplete in some case.
2. curl plug-in: improve downloaded segment handler.
3. curl plug-in: set min split size to 10 MiB.
4. curl plug-in: adjust speed when plug-in add/remove segments in speed limit mode.
5. curl plug-in: avoid showing "99:99:99" in "elapsed" when downloading start.
6. aria2 plug-in: fix a memory leak.
7. Fix: Program stop running download when user set "Runnable" to it.
8. Revert uri deocder to 2.0.4, this may fix incorrect encoding on some chracters.
9. if file "uget-portable-mode" exists, data files save in installed folder. (Windows)

* This version fix bug that download speed is slow when progress near 100%
* If you usually get error message "Incorrect source", I suggest you use this version.
* In Windows, If "uget-portable-mode" and "uget.exe" place in the same folder, data files will save in uGet installed folder.
@Moderators
Please move this thread to Portable Freeware Submission sub-forum- since version 2.0.6 uGet is portable.

Re: uGet 2.0.8

#13 Post by smaragdus »

uGet at version 2.0.8, changes since version 2.0.6:
uGet 2.0.7: (2016-04-09)
1. Fix: UI freeze if user activate download in sorted list.
2. Add Keywords entry into desktop file (Elías Alejandro Año Mendoza)
3. update translation files.
uGet 2.0.8: (2016-05-16)
1. In speed limit mode, program adjust existing task speed when adding new task.
2. Add new setting "Display large icon".
3. Add configure argument "--enable-unix-socket" to use JSON-RPC over UNIX domain socket.
4. use msys2 + mingw to build uGet for windows.
5. curl plug-in: Don't use CURLAUTH_ANY, it causes authentication failed.
6. Fix: User can't use command-line to assign config directory (ui-gtk-1to2).
7. (2.1.3-2) Fix: Incorrect encoding on some characters (e.g. French characters)
8. (2.1.3-2) Fix: Program stop download queuing in some case.
Pay attention that in version 2.0.7 settings were stored in \uGet\bin\config\uGet while in version 2.0.8 settings are stored in \uGet\config\uGet, in short, config folder has been moved from bin sub-folder to uGet main folder.
In version 2.0.8
uGet for Windows upgrade GTK+ from 3.10.4 to 3.16.6
which also means that uGet has different looks:

uGet 2.0.7:

Image

uGet 2.0.8:

However I don't like the new style.

IMHO, uGet v2.0.7 looks somewhat more characteristically Windows... given enough GTK savvy :o, retaining the older style should be feasible.

As a secondary download manager uGet works fine for me- I use it mainly when Free Download Manager fails do grab a file from a particular web-site (this happens seldom and I am no longer willing to report such download failures at FDM forum). Once when there was a Windows installer FlashGot recognized uGet automatically but now it has to be added manually. What I miss in uGet is a drop basket (I am not using the term "drop box" to evade ambiguity).
