Yes, in the W0W Not Portable sub forum.

Requirement: .net 4.0 + admin rights
Settings: user.config file in
\user\current\AppData\Local\Nicke_Manarin\ScreenToGif_1.4.exe_Url_dthuuvp1u2x0hpkmhqfsg0kn5r2i5xer\1.4.0.0

There is no need for that, Wolfy, posting here is fine but please mention whether it is tested for portability or not.

Looks like a very competent alternative to GifCam. Will have to test it! Cheers for letting us know.

Someone should suggest a portable mode in the Issues section.

Tested v 1.4.1

Status: Still writes to AppData

The website looked really cool so I tried to make a go of this as a possible screen recording tool but I ran out of patience pretty quickly.  I found the interface really confusing.

Wishlist:

* Add text and drawing tools should let you work on more than one frame at once
* Ability to set framerate for recordings
* Resizing the window while recording should keep the areas cut out either static or blank.  In my testing it just looked off.
* Gif Editor should have thumbnails in the progress bar and you should be able to select several of them to delete frames, apply filters, or add text/drawings.  Alternatively, I think RealWorld Paint might do this.
* GPL license (currently Ms-RL)

Another vote for this well crafted animated-screen to animated-GIF capture tool.
And I beg to differ about the intuitive, (un)confusing interface, at least to yours truly...;-)

Most recent (portable ?)** version:

ScreentoGIF v1.4.2 released 27-AUG-2015

zip archive: 880k; single *.exe file: 8.79M

Image

** At first sight, looks portable enough
ScreentoGIF.exe innocuous few registry entries found by RegScanner :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\LastVisitedMRU
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.gif\OpenWithList

Plus, on second sight, and additional not-so innocuous REG_BINARY entry :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\0\1\0\0\3\2\7 0 REG_BINARY 9C 00 31 00 00 00 00 00 37 47 46 7A 10 00 53 43 52 45 45 4E 7E 33 2E 45 58 45 00 00 80 00 03 00 04 00 EF BE 37 47 46 7A 37 47 74 8B 14 00 00 00 53 00 63 00 72 00 65 00 65 00 6E 00 74 00 6F 00 47 00 49 00 46 00 2E 00 65 00 78 00 65 00 5F 00 55 00 72 00 6C 00 5F 00 77 00 6F 00 33 00 6D 00 78 00 6F 00 6A 00 73 00 6D 00 76 00 66 00 34 00 77 00 30 00 34 00 72 00 34 00 34 00 69 00 6F 00 7A 00 76 00 30 00 76 00 79 00 61 00 72 00 78 00 73 00 79 00 69 00 30 00 00 00 1C 00 00 00 158

which, after string conversion, happens to include:

"ScreentoGIF.exe_Url_wo3mxojsmvf4w04r44iozv0vyarxsyi0"

Latest 1.4.2 version still not portable, am afraid...:-(

@billon

Quite a few "hexadecimal to string" converters are available online, e.g. :
http://string-functions.com/hex-string.aspx

Alternatively, some self-contained conversion tools were specifically designed to "Decode and Convert Windows Registry Hex Values to Text".

Four of those (rather ancient) tools are discussed here:

Those registry keys are normal and nothing to do with the developer storing data. Looks stealth to me based on the information you provided.

@guinness

...which, after string conversion, happens to include:
"ScreentoGIF.exe_Url_wo3mxojsmvf4w04r44iozv0vyarxsyi0"
Latest 1.4.2 version still not portable, am afraid...

Further to the decoded REG_BINARY registry key finding above, please consider:

Nirsoft's ShellBagsView tool returns the following entry when searching for "ScreentoGIF.exe":

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Nicke_Manarin\ScreentoGIF.exe_Url_wo3mxojsmvf4w04r44iozv0vyarxsyi0\1.4.2.0
Therefore, since ScreentoGIF stores some configuration info to \Application Data, my only contention was that it can reasonably be classified as Not Portable,
(likewise formerly observed by Baas and Webfork)

Hi everyone, I'm the developer of ScreenToGif.

The only non-portable aspect of the app is the "Settings manager" that manages and saves all the settings of the app.
(for example: the framerate, size of the recording, font color, etc.)

It's all handled by the .Net framework, that's why it saves inside the AppData folder.
The Settings manager creates a default file if there is no settings already saved inside that folder.

I'm currently developing a completely new version with a better UI and more features, but it's still in alpha.
https://screentogif.codeplex.com/releases/view/617532

I have a little dilemma: I want a portable app, but I need to save some data to make the life of the user a little bit easier. How can I do this?
I'm using the "Settings manager" because it's way easier to save and get data from. I don't like the idea of carrying a .ini file around. :(

Wishlist: (answered)

* Add text to multiple frames... Since v1.0...
* Ability to set framerate for recordings... Since v0.3 (I believe)
* Resizing the window while recording... Working on it...
* Gif Editor should have thumbnails in the progress bar... Since the new version of the app (the alpha)
* and you should be able to select several of them... Since v1.0
* GPL license (currently Ms-RL)... Currently using Ms-PL
