TagSpaces (file management utility)

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

TagSpaces (file management utility)

#1 Post by Midas » Mon Oct 13, 2014 3:59 am

I hesitated between posting TagSpaces (untested!) in the non-portable freeware forum instead of on "Resources and Links", considering its decidedly multi(plat)form nature -- it exist as a program for Windows, Linux (including special releases for Ubuntu and Android) and MacOS, as well as a browser extension for both Chrome and Firefox (and there's also a beta package for OwnCloud extension). Anyway, here it is...
TagSpaces is an open source personal data manager. It helps you organize files with tags on every platform. [...] TagSpaces is running completely offline on your computer, smartphone or tablet and does not require internet connection or online registration. You can still use platforms like ownCloud, Dropbox or Bittorrent Sync in order to sync your files between devices.

The latest TagSpaces release (currently v1.8.6) can be downloaded from http://www.tagspaces.org/downloads/.

Video looks interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ2hYU6U-C8#t=92

Have you been using the program? What's it useful/ideal for?

Nah, not really -- getting too old (and dumb) to learn any new tricks. I like the conceptual abstraction from the filesystem, though, like a personalised logic grid to manage your local underverse... ;)

TagSpaces - OpenSource File Management Utility

#6 Post by Erdeslawe » Fri Apr 01, 2016 11:25 am

Haven't seen this one receive a mention yet:

TagSpaces: https://www.tagspaces.org

From the Website:

"What is TagSpaces?

TagSpaces is a new, cross-platform tool for organizing, editing and tagging information.

What is it good for?

Users can operate with local files and folders on different platforms through a single friendly interface which allows them to view, edit, and add tags to their information.

Is it compatible with my platform?

It is compatible with Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, IPhone, Firefox and Chrome.

Do I need Internet access?

No

Is it a cloud service?

No

Where do I register my account?

Nowhere

Does it use database for saving the tags?

No

Is it secure?

The app makes no external requests, it’s completely offline, all your data is stored locally and never sent by network. It doesn’t contain any statistics collection scripts, analytics or ads. The only request this application performs is version check which can be disabled in the settings.

Where does TagSpaces save the tags?

Currently the tags are added in name of the file, so for example if you tag the file “img-9832.jpg” with the tags “sunset” and “bahamas” it will be renamed to “img-9832 [sunset bahamas].jpg”. A version of TagSpaces which saves the tags in a sidecar files will be released soon."

Portable Mode introduced from the release of Version 2 - see https://www.tagspaces.org/blog/tagspace ... rtablemode

I haven't tested the claimed portability yet, but thought someone might be interested.

Version 2.2.1 seems portable but not stealth.

Settings and user generated data are saved in the application folder within \tagspaces-2.2.1-win64\tagspaces\tsprofile folder
Creates a folder in \AppData\Roaming\tagspaces

Auto-check for updates is enabled by default.

I tested this out briefly and really liked the emphasis placed on keeping things local and private:

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing that in other open source / freeware tools.
