Finally came back to HDDB - it's really cleaned up. Now that I've got the directory structure on the right, it's going to be hard to go back. There's some minor UI issues such as sometimes I double-click on the tray icon and it doesn't immediately pop up (have to click the button again), sometimes when I minimize it I get this annoying "it's not closed" message that I can't turn off, and sometimes the directory search box hesitates, but this is looking like a real upgrade from Everything rather than just an interesting alternative.

I really need to update my initial post on that but it'll have to wait ...

HDDB FileHasher supplement notes
  • The page describing it (http://hddb.xp-zed.com/getstarted/file_hashes.html) doesn't actually say what it does but essentially this hashes your entire drive and helps you track down duplicates.

What was really cool about this process was just starting with a blank search block, searching by number of duplicates, and just scrolling down to see all sorts of duplicate files on my system. McAfee, LibreOffice, and XMind all seem to have a remarkable number of redudant files.
  • Works on the entire drive. If you want hashes for individual or groups of files I'd recommend plugging RapidCRC Unicode or Multihasher into the Windows SendTo menu.
  • Seems to work pretty fast ... ran for about 30 mins on my 87 gig SSD
  • Very low processor usage (1-2%), takes up about 32 megs RAM while the program is running
  • Uses CRC hashing (not surprising)
How to get it: available from the download site where the portable version is listed) You can run it from the tools menu.

Setup: run the program and then you can right-click on the top listing bar (with name, path, size, etc.) and check "Hash" and "Duplicate Count"

Any reason there isn't a database entry on this one? Thinking about submitting one unless there's a good reason not to.

I think you should, too -- can't recall any reason against it...

Awesome. I did an edit to the entry that I hope is helpful. Also, just a note that phrases in the keywords section need a %20 between them and commas don't work (I put something there too).

Thanks for doing that. I had planned to do so since the recent updates had really pulled this into position as my search tool of choice but kept getting distracted.

It would be helpful if those instructions are included in the submission form. Right now, the instructions state to separate keywords by a space.

The instructions are right. Keywords are indeed separated by spaces. That's the reason why you need to escape spaces in keywords.

The database entry instructions state, "Download the self-extracting EXE to a folder of your choice. Launch HDDB.EXE.". However after downloading the x64 version under 'Portable versions' the exe itself is the app rather than self-extracting, and creates a config file in the same directory. Perhaps the instructions could be clarified.

Some thoughts compared to Everything:

Pros:
- Thumbnail support.
- Folder tree view sidebar.
- Navigation buttons (very useful).
- Named search (eg: "@Text Example" searches text files with 'Example'). Everything has a similar, customizable feature.
- Configurable Actions can be set to run from a menu.
- Columns expand when window is resized (Everything has static width columns).
- Recent searches appear in the taskbar Jumplist and can be pinned (according to screenshots).
- Includes both Ribbon and regular UI options.

Cons:
- Lacks live file change updates, requires manual builds of the database. This is somewhat mitigated by options to update every n minutes.
- There is only a list view, which reduces the benefit of thumbnails as the rows are enlarged making results longer.
- Folder icons can be upside down (bug).
- Database options not as extensive as Everything.

Other:
- Still unsure how to exclude files from results when searching. Neither "!" nor "-" worked.
- Haven't tried any RegEx but unclear if it's supported.

It's a very nice addition to the database, and depending on a user's needs could be more useful than Everything.

I updated the instructions.
