Can we conclude that the difference then is a whole lot of... crappy bytes?

Code: Select all

CamStudio Portable = 23,363,633 bytes (60 Files, 13 Folders)
X-CamStudio = 21,621,520 bytes (52 Files, 9 Folders)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1,742,113 bytes (8 Files, 4 Folders) of crap

Gave it a few weeks to see if there was any reason to choose one over the other, so if the only difference is size, that's what I'll go with. Entry updated with the WinPenPack version.

I tried the x-camstudio to demo my BengaziGame:
http://www.quickerthanaspark.com/Bengaz ... iGame.html
And it created a video only file of 1.2 GB .
Then I trialed 1avCenter .
1avCenter created the same stuff @ 6mb .

File sizes depend on the encoding used. Uncompressed or lossless codecs will result in large file size but excellent quality. Lossy codecs like xvid/divx or x264 will be much smaller but you lose some picture quality mainly because of the colorspace conversion from rgb to yv12 which usually results in blurry and less vibrant colors. 1avCenter thing probably uses some form of lossy compression.

The good thing about Camstudio is that you can configure which kind of codec you want to use. Camstudio has its own lossless codec you can optionally download from their website but its not as good as some alternatives.

For lossless codecs, the best ones are utvideo and lagarith. For lossy, theres x264vfw and xvid. These codecs need to be installed before camstudio can use them so they aren't portable.

The tools used between programs for recording aren't very different so if you can diagnose with one, you should be able to figure out what's up with all of them. Have you tested using audio recording tools like Audacity / Wavosaur?

From experience, if you download a Camtasia trial, they'll give you free email support.

Camstudio v 2.7.2 r326 is out ... hasn't made it's way out to the wrapper programs yet ...
Still waiting on WWP version so right now http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/ ... o_portable is the portable homepage for this.

Changelog, etc.: http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-S ... able.shtml

Weird, as there is nothing on the official site or sourceforge about this update.

Yeah I checked the http://camstudio.org/ page and the update isn't an update at all. It's from back in October 2013. I guess they just got around to updating softpedia. Whoops.

Yesterday when I checked the version number was different on SOFTPEDIA, now it's not. Or maybe I just read it wrong.

I have updated X-CamStudio to the latest version I could find: 2.7.4 r354.
You can download it here: https:// openload.cc/7fN [moderator warning: may contain malware] 1tf09n3/X-CamStudio_2.7.4_7z.
