Caesium - image compressor

#1 Post by SlowLearner »

Desciption:
Caesium reduces the size of your picture up to 90%, preserving the original quality. Caesium allows you to save a lot of space and quickly upload your pictures on the web (on sites like Facebook, MySpace etc) saving a lot of time. Also Webmasters for instance need to make sure the images they post on their websites are optimized, to avoid prolonged loading times for their visitors. The software allows you to view instantly the compression results, helping you to decide how much optimization you need. Caesium can set different compression levels to each image, saving a lot of time, ensuring great results!

Great, is reduced my test set from 3.7 to 5.3 MB!
Err...maybe not so great.

Thanks for testing. Its GPL and Addictive tips seemed to like it:

Would be tough to get me to use something other than RIOT but I certainly prefer open source.

I would have nothing against it if they labelled it just as a converter and not a strong lossless compressor. By default is lossy, so I wouldn't recommend it to newbies. And it's pathetically weak, so I wouldn't recommend it to advanced users either.

ADDED:
BTW even the example on their main site is lossy, if you look close the images are different.

http://caesium.sourceforge.net

It doesn't compare to some of the other tools on the site, but happy to have an OSS batch image processor. Developer was very responsive with a minor bug.

Wishlist

* Quality settings for PNG (cut down on colors, similar to RIOT)
* Click and drag to see different parts of the preview windows when viewed at normal size
* Some kind of separate preview that lets you compare both images in as large as possible views (ideally full screen, split horizontally or vertically)
* Other transform options (rotate, crop, watermarking, and other operations available in so many non-open and non-free graphics programs.)
* When you select "open folder" a checkbox should be available to open folders recursively.

Odd behavior:

* For some reason when you click on an item in the table, the resize goes down a percentage point or two and and gradually gets smaller and smaller. I'm not sure what that's supposed to do or how it works.

Obligatory "I thought I searched for it" note goes here. Add extra embarrassment due to having commented on the old post and not remembering it.

No, that's a different program with the same name. I think the homepage for the program in this thread is http://caesium.sourceforge.net/ but sourceforge is having some kind of issue at the moment so I can't say for sure.

I've considered adding the sourceforge version, but the program hasn't been in development for years and doesn't have dramatically better features than similar tools already in the database. About the only reason to add it is because it's open source, but that wasn't a strong pull the last time I tested it.

I neglected to address the Saerasoft Caesium version ... it looks a bit like FileOptimizer (https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2377), but cross-platform and solely for JPEGs. As I use FO for JPEGs probably more than anything else, I'm interested in tools like it, but cutting 10% off of a given file is pretty standard for FO as well.

There is a portable version listed on the downloads page. Untested.

Ah -- I see what happened: The converter program I was talking about did more than JPEG compression. It was converted or taken over by someone who cut out all the conversion functions. You can see the program I was talking about over at PA: https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_ ... m-portable ... they also point to the SourceForge site, which is not the same program.

Have you compared it with FileOptmizer? Is it giving better results on JPEG files?
